Depends on who does it.

Im a licensed electrican and charged someone (this was a side job, not through the company i work for) $419 in parts (did not mark up parts at all even though thats common practice) and $475 labor to instal a sub panel, re feed a couple circuits from the main to the sub and also run a pair of 12/2’s from the new panel about 20’, poke out of the house, LB up into 3/4” pvc and into a disconnect for a future heat pump. The AC disco has a build in seperate circuit service GFI outlet.

I did this today and it took me 4 hours, though i added on my time it took to get the parts last week.

$2-3k sounds like a lot.

We put in a sub panel for our generator. If you've ever thought about having one now would be the time to wire for it.

About $1200 in my area, as part of a new HVAC system.

Are you doing this yourself? Whether or not, I would pick a panel from the same company as your main panel (so that you have interchangeable breakers), Also, be generous as to size, the cost of a big panel is not much greater than a small one.
