Rooftop HVAC Air Duct temporary repair

Dear all, our church which is located in San Francisco has a long section of rooftop HVAC Air Ducts which has a big hole due to rust and salty air:

Couple of quick questions:

We are in the process of getting it repaired, but in case that the project can not start right away and the rain season in SF is coming, is there a temporary repair we can do to prevent water getting into the air ducts?
If water somehow did get into the air ducts before (e.g. during pandemic for the past three years), would that have damaged the AC Unit? If so, how do we find out?

You're dealing with indoor air quality that affects lots of people when assembled in your church. You owe it to them to get a professional to inspect the HVAC system, assess the condition, and make whatever repairs are needed up to a full replacement.

Joseph is right about rubber product with sealant being inexpensive and reliable. You could also use EPDM or asphalt sheet roofing material. No need to panic and hire a remediation contractor if you suspect mold. Call around to find an environmental test lab and ask for 1 or 2 test kits. The kits are diy friendly,accurate and cost $20-$30 each plus $75-$100 for report after you return kit to lab.

I'd use a piece of sheet metal large enough and a tube of urethane caulk as an adhesive.
