This is something I like, but the colour isn’t practical for me (as much as I would live the light coloured furniture).

A light colored sofa (the light color in the background of the rug) would work in the room. Are you reluctant to have one because of pets and/or children? I keep throws on mine because they're easy to remove and wash. You could always do that. Remove them when you have company. Also, Performance fabrics are easy to clean. People don't really buy loveseats anymore. I think the chair you have near the window is fine, particularly if it's comfortable and you like it, no need to replace it.

So what would you say to moving the low teak bookcase to behind your dining tab;e, under your wall fabric, and moving the white shelves with the dark top now in the dining area to the space where the dog bed iis now? Then turn the dining table and rug the other way and move the tall teak cabinet down to that space that now has the low white shelves in it.

Having created a longer space for a sofa along the wall, maybe a chocolate leather sofa might look nice.

Get a useful coffee table, maybe in the same color as the top of the white shelves that have a dark top. Move the blue chair more into the upper right corner and find another light blue chair to put on the other side of shelves with the dark top.

If the room functions well for you now, don't add more furniture. It looks nicely filled to me.

Every room doesn't need to be jammed full .

I need a to scale floor plan of this whole space and showing how it relates to the rest of the house. Do you entertain large groups ? It seems the DR space is quite small. Do the to scale plan on graph paer post here in jpeg format and in a comment DO NOT start another post. The drawing needs to show all windows , doorways where those lead and every measurement clearly marked . Most of all we need to have some info as to how you entertain. Will you need a bigger dining table , pics of the FR would also be good and the same post here in comments.

I liked the suggestion of plum colored sofa, but it would be more plum than I would want and leaves the curtains and fabric art feeling lonely. You would need to bring in more red in throw blankets and pillows .

Place the shelves in the nook area below the window and place the small sofa/loveseat in front of it. Have two matching chairs that face the sofa, and place the teak cabinet on the wall between the sofa and the chair. Get a round coffee table/ottoman so you can put your feet up while eating breakfast. On my monitor your rug reads a bit on the purple side to me, so that's why I show the purple chairs. Select whatever color works best in person. And there are a lot of inexpensive chair and loveseat options so go with the style that suits you best. For lighting I would suggest lamps placed on the teak cabinet and also the lower shelves. If the lower shelves were too low, then you could also do swing arm lamps on the walls to the sides of the window.

Partim is right. If you eventually do host big parties, borrow chairs from other rooms in the house or rent chairs from a party supplier.

• Lowered the art
• Placed a plant on the dining table.

I have a "Sitting Room" off of my bedroom. I don't need a sitting room, I need a craft/sewing room. I will be setting it up to work for me.

I repurposed the dining room in my last home to be a family room and the family room became my office and we ate at the kitchen counter. No table.

My one girlfriend set her dining room up as saddle storage for all her show saddles.

You should make your home work for the way you live your life, not the way others think you should live your life.

I agree with @partim - I think another chair makes the front room seem more welcoming (it has more of a "join me" type of feeling) - Facebook Marketplace is a great source for armchairs if you're patient
