2023 - The Year in Quotes

In years past I’ve posted an annual quotes list, a fun little endeavor for me that is both creative as the list is actually composed, and thought provoking. These are all actual quotes by forum members with only very minor editing or a note in italics if context is needed.

I normally write a little preamble regarding the creation of the list itself because I’m always a little nervous about it given the internet, but I’ll let previous years preambles suffice in that regard. Those lists are tagged in an “ideabook” of mine and, for those interested, they’re here Annual Quote Threads - an Ideabook by Architectrunnerguy (houzz.com)

And of course, as always, if anyone sees their words here and is so inclined, please feel free to jump in and claim a number or two! Folks have not been timid about that in the past!

So with that said , enjoy, hope everyone that reads it gets a smile or takes away something valuable from it and if you do it’s great to get support from it as I’ve had doubts if it’s worth the effort, especially with so much “real” work…..lol.

But Happy New Year to all, and here’s wishing everyone’s projects for 2024 come in ahead of schedule and under budget!

What a fabulous list I will save it like I do the rules of a good house plan.

    1. This may be my favorite Houzz thing [comment posted on last year’s list].

Look I started next year’s list for you!

Fun list, but #30 needs a little more context:

"30. This forum is primarily intended for design advice, not cost advice. No matter where you live, it is difficult if not impossible for people on this forum to provide accurate cost information."

This depends upon the project. Yes, it's near impossible to reconcile the costs of remodeling in Hawaii to those in Nebraska, however, certain jobs, like a sink replacement, wouldn't vary too much from state to state.

In addition, it's not "impossible" to tell when a poster has a completely unrealistic budget for their scope of work, no matter where they reside, so 5 responders telling them so may be just the smack in the forehead that they need.

I don't think #65 is me, but if not, I wish it were:

"65. I add 30% to my hours estimate if the client is pregnant. Or an engineer."

#66 (plus those comments dealing with architects) I don't understand the reluctance to fire people who are not doing their job. We're building a house after we lost our home to a fire. We fired the architect and the first interior designer. If they are not listening, if they are not responding, if they are doing poor work, then fire them. It will be cheaper to fire them now than to continue piling on the mistakes and the frustrations.

    .......The best right here:

"68. Is it wrong that I am enjoying these comments as though watching a spectator sport?" No it isn't to whomever said it!!!!

To which I shall add.....the feeling of the SPORT THAT IS HOUZZ: )

I claim this one. The entire list is great but my favorites are #47 and #63.

I need to add 30% to my estimate if the client owns a cell phone! Meaning I should add 30% to nearly everything or will invoice, only to realize I could have been swabbing the kitchen floor at McDonalds: )

I don't know if I wrote #68 or just thought it to myself watching Jan and Two Cents go at it.

    Great list. Thanks for posting.

"These clever sayings are more than just witty remarks – they provide a multifaceted commentary on the intricacies of home design, construction, and the dynamics of online forums, all while infusing a sense of humor and practical wisdom into the conversation."

    Damn perceptive Chat GPT.

(Again, I didn't make the cut.)

I vote this in for next year..... on a thread today about multiple finishes in hardware....

"you have one alternate cabinet finish so that's not what we are talking about in this situation. But I think sometimes if you have one clown, its a lame birthday party. If you want a circus you have to have more than one clown."

    Got that right : )

I'm crushed not to be included.

Feeling like Aaron Rogers... smug, good looking but didn't play a worthwhile snap in 2023 except I'm still young enough to return in 2024.

I usually wait about a week before responding to these so "Thank you" to everyone who likes it. As I said above, a fun little endeavor although the editing and crafting it is always a tad harder than I think it should be as there's so many good (and funny) thoughts over the year.

And @Jeffrey R. Grenz......you're represented this year #66. And yes, you're still young enough to return in 2024!!!
