I think rug is a way better way to go than wallpapering the chimney. Lots of options to combine the colors in the room and pull everything togethr.

Take all the doo dad stuff off the window sill - the color IS the feature.

If you want the fire wall as feature, paint the chimney breast as wall color, and paint the mantel oak away to a satin finish of the wall color on the other three.

Can you show the other sides of the room and a pic of the views above, but farther back? Is it open to other rooms (kitchen, etc)? Is it where you watch TV? What other furniture is in there?

I’d definitely want a rug, as well as lamps so you don’t have to use harsh, overhead lighting.

I would suggest that you do something to dress the windows. Right now, especially at night, they are what one of my design teachers called a "black hole." Fabric would warm up the space, either curtain panels or shades.

And instead of wallpaper, you might consider painting the walls in a color that works with whatever rug you buy.

I would love to see the whole spac e. I cannot see any place for wall paper . The granite is an odd choice and the mirror is a no get a fab piece of art bigger is better. Nothing on the window sills maybe one orchid. The coffee table is pretty useless and one spill of wine will say goodbye to the lamb. . Where is the lighting? If that is aliving plsnt in the corner it needs a bigger pot and if fakre it needs the garbage. I have no clue if it is a charming space so post more pics here in a comment DO NOT start another post . Anything now to do with this space goes here in comments .

I would not go down the path of wallpaper. I would select a rug and do some color blocking in the space.

Agreed. The granite is yucky. Unfortunately this very small space is also open to the kitchen which has the same.

I am a renter, Jilly. The fireplace can be removed for only $500 and the landlords might be open to that. However, I kind of like it. Peel and stick tile? Like the one that Paul recommended?

The windows are huge Diana! They look onto a historic train depot, 200-year-old ship, and the city and train tracks. Hadn't thought about window treatments. The view at night is actually quite spectacular as everything is lit up. But I am open to window covering ideas.

At this point my budget is only about $2,000.

I don’t blame you for keeping the window bare and views clear. But if you ever want to soften it up, I might try a tall-ish cafe curtain — something light/not heavy, just to add to the charm.

But at this height:

Seeing more of the rooms, I don’t think your fireplace looks bad at all. But it needs to make you happy, not me! I wonder how it would look if the mantel was painted or stained something different?

I do think a rug would be a great addition to the sofa area — both form and function. It would look nice, feel soft, and separate the spaces a bit (or at least give the illusion of doing so). I wouldn’t use one with too much purple, or overly dark colors, though, as I think that would put too much visual weight in that one area with your dark sofa. I rarely say this, but I’d go with something more neutral.

And I’ll repeat about lamps, you need some! Tons of possibilities, including finding vintage ones.

I really like your style, it brings to mind Anthropologie meets vintage collecting, but says ”you”. Looking forward to seeing what you decide! :)

ETA: Colorful pillows would be an easy way to tie in your purple and blue.

Now that we have seen more of the space, we see that you have placed lots of white furnishings in front of white walls and they kind of fade into the walls. The room requires some anchors. Pick a rug for starters and then go from there.

Showing a full floor plan.. with all measurements…is a big help …in spaces like yours…also…if possible using smaller rugs to define some areas …will break up the “small studio” feel
