EDITED-Decision Reached 2/22/24 10 am Paint color- Master Bath

last modified: 2 years ago

So the bathroom reno is progressing along on track- was taken down to the studs and rebuilding- all the preliminary plumbing and electric has been done.Sheet rock is going to be in soon along with tiling.........which brings us to the paint color. They would like to paint before all the stuff is in there which makes sense.....so I am asking if you have any brainstorms? I had thought i'd like a soft bluegrayish kind of color but wonder if someone has an idea that I might not have considered. I'm all ears and eyes.

I can only share my selections. Yes if this looks familiar it's because I've shared a few times seeking advice on lighting, vanity, mirror, towel bars, you name it.

Anyway- I need to pick a paint color. ( SW preferably but not required).

Picture of Chrome Sconce to flank mirror over vanity,

Shower Wall Tile ( the vertical) with bathroom floor tile ( hex) then

Vanity then bathroom floor . will have chrome faucets, black framed mirror, chrome sconces.

So- any suggestions ? The shower wall tile is also white with gray and brown and teeny bit smattering of rust/

I have a long list of colors I am considering- but most are in the pastel range and are as I said, bluegraywhites. Would a warmer color (lol and which one) come to mind? Suggest away. I have a few days to get this squared away.

    The colors I was considering

    'SW

    Icicle,

    Quicksilver

    Misty

    Site White

    What color is your bedroom?

I will soon be in the same place as you. I am thinking to just continue my bedroom paint color which I do like a lot to the bathroom. My bedroom is Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan. It can look tan or gray. In my house, it's mostly a tan. I have it in my family room too and really like it.

Anyway, doesn't sound like the direction you want to go, but my suggestion is to consider your bedroom color in the mix. If not the same, it should coordinate nicely IMO.

Salon, take a look at SW Silver Strand. It might have the silvery blue you like.

Here it is with warm wood:

And since this is tagged with other boards, let me say to strangers reading this: YES, we’re all aware at this point in our lives that monitors are different, lighting affects things, yada yada yada. It really is ok to post inspiration pictures for … inspiration.

I gave two on the other post, both from Laurel Bern. Can't find them anymore as I cleared my search history.

The natural light from your two windows will make a light paint look bluer, so a paint that reads blue on the chip will only be more blue on the wall. I actually went into the whites for samples--Reflection, Rock Candy, Rhinestone and Olympus White--and still saw quite a bit of blue when we got sample pots.

Paints with silver in the name often have a lavender undertone. I just checked Quicksilver on SW's website and look what they say:

"This bright violet with its blue-green undertones is a light, playful hue that’s hard to pin down in different lighting. Perfect for a light-hearted bathroom."

If you use a color with mid-level saturation, you may like it more as the background color for your light-colored vanity, tile and countertop and the chrome fixtures.

A lot of these gradations in color are really false precision. I recall when we painted the base of our island in CT blue, one color looked different based on where my dog was standing. So many things will impact the color and your perception of it that the differences between shade 6204 and 6205 don't really matter IMHO, especially if you are not matching a color elsewhere in the room.

This is one reason why I like Farrow and Ball's small, more curated collection. They only give you colors that are materially different from one another. Why waste your time with a zillion shades of barely perceptible variation? YMMV

I think you are in the try it in-situ stage. Pick three from your list and get a Samplize and hang them up in there. Look at them over a day and I am sure you will get more direction from that experiment.

PS I would not go warm

That silver strand that Jilly posted looks like a good choice.

All good suggestions. The issue is that we haven't repainted since we moved in, other than the rooms we really worked on. The Master bedroom is a nothing color, in need of painting. Indecision on steroids.

I am pretty consistent in my taste, and generally have BLUE when I get a choice, though I have noticed I;m liking some greens a bit now too. ( big growth). Clearly I;m partial to blue so any color I choose will have to live well with it, if it isn't some version of blue itself.

Jilly- I think Silver Strand had been in the running initially but then I thought it might be too strong... will have to revisit.

Mtn, you're helpful in saying not to go warm because I didn't think warm would work but wanted to see if maybe I was too prejudging.

I have been studying the threads. I think one of the colors you suggested, I think Spare White (as being a shade ligher than sea salt which is lighter than comfort gray, is no longer in the rendition. They could probably make it, but I couldn't get a chip.

I'm going to lunch soon- and otherwise debating paint color, layout pattern for showertile, towel accessories, and grab bars.

I would wait and decide when the bathroom is completed.

We had to color match our tile because every gray paint, while lovely in itself, clashed with our tiles.

This color has a slight amethyst undertone in person.

Home Depot was the only one to try for us to color match. BM and SW declined.

We had them shoot the lightest color portion of the tile. With that, this is a deep color.

Like you, I tried all the popular grays. At least 12 samples.

I would color shoot this. The can tell you the formula. I was surprised how much “ red” was in my sample. See what is in yours. That will give a direction if you can to go with a color as well.

If you go with a gray, you can bring in color with the accessories etc.

I have a few different add ins, aqua and gray, amethyst and white towels.

The tiles you show are very different colors. The top one is warm like Eld's, the bottom is cool... to me at least. What does the mfr photo look like?

I would take a sample of the two tiles to the paint store and look at the color chips in the store. Find two or three (or ten) that you like and sample those in the light of your bathroom with the tile. I wish I could suggest a color for you, but as so many have said, too many things affect how the color will look in your room.

They are wanting to paint before everything goes in.... so I need to select. I am going to assume I get it right and love it, (but if not, it can be repainted).

The manufacturer's photos are here. The off thing is one has white grout, and the other has gold grout. I am using pale pale gray ( frost color) grout.

In the photo I have at the head of this thread, they had a sample with dark gray grout.

and here is the shower wall with the bizarre yellow grout.

yes the floor is cooler and the wall is warmer but IRL they look nice together. and I won't have yellow orange grout.

He started to lay the floor tile yesterday and I brought my deck with me to study colors.

So far, I have to say Jilly's suggestion of Silver Strand is looking good. I really thought it was too dark but seeing it in the room, it looks a lot better than I expected. Daytime it's such a bright room, even with the blinds closed. The tile installer was commenting on how bright the room is. It's hard to judge at night because there are no lights in the room.... but will try again tonight to look at it.

@Lizzie Borden I figured easier to tag you here :)

I am always partial to blues, and I think a gray blue is the way to go. I've stared at all the ones mentioned above, and then probaly 30 more. I;m trying very hard to eliminate and narrow down. My current front runner to my surprise is Silver Strand which is deeper than I thought I wanted, and possibly more gray than I wanted, but it seems to work nicely. I 'm hoping it pulls blue.

    Do you have any suggestions?

This is from Jilly's post above.

and I know its confusing with muliptle threads but anyway here's the tile in the room........

seeing them both here, they do play nicely together.

before they grout, if you dont care for a specific tile have them change or hide it

Try Ben Moore Silver Satin: very subtle warm gray but plays well with cool-tone carpet in my attic.

salonva, you know I love blues :)). I don't usually give advice but rather just watch. Since you asked I like some pale blue/green colors also. A few I would look at is Sherwin Williams Sea Salt, Benjamin Moore Smoke, Benjamin Moore Glass Slipper, and Benjamin Moore Silver Lake. I also like the Sherwin Williams color that Jilly posted.

Sherwin Williams Windy Blue? We are (I think) doing that in our master bath. A lovely color.

I was looking at SW Jubilee online and it looks true blue but more muted because it's grayed down.

    https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/blue-paint-colors/SW6248-jubilee

Here's a discussion of Krypton, the next color up on the strip.

    BTW, SW's sale ends tomorrow.

Have you tried Ben Moore Gray Owl? We have it in our bathroom and on some days it takes on a blue-ish tint in some parts of the room and with some lighting very pale gray. For some I have read comments of it looking a bit pale gray-green. Worth a sample board if you are still undecided. A painted sample board is helpful to me in deciding.

Yes I am still looking. You should see my spreadsheet. Each time someone mentions a paint name, I am ON it. I really appreciate all the suggesions and feedback.

I think I will be blocked from hextoral and plan-home because I have hogged those sites soooo much.

I've been doing this for the past hour and was doing it earlier this morning. As of this minute, these are the front runners. I am a little hesitant regarding the ones with some more green in them. In my powder room I have Sea Salt which looks beautiful, but I have never looked good when I look in the mirror since the room was painted that gray green....... Food for thought.

Your color preferences sound very similar to mine. We recently finished a renovation and had to choose colors for several rooms. I considered nearly every blue-gray-green-white color mentioned here and I have the paint samples to prove it! If you lived nearby, I would happily give them to you :)

For my primary bath, I was torn between grayish blue and grayish green and finally selected SW Serenely. Love it.

In my kitchen, I wanted something light, not too baby blue, not too gray, and not lavender. Painted many many samples (most of which you’ve listed here) and landed on SW Rhinestone. It’s perfect.

For a powder room, I wanted a calm but crisp blue and went with SW Mountain Air. I already knew I loved it b/c one of my kids chose it for their bedroom.

For an office, I wanted a bluish white and went with Nebulous White. Just right.

A few other blue-greens I have in my house are Sea Salt (a classic), Sleepy Blue, and Tradewind. Did I mention that I really like blue?

    Good luck with your choice!

oh my Sconsett! This is too timely. Yesterday I sat once again with the paint deck, using hextoral and plan-home and my eyes and the lighting and kept coming up to:

Serenely, which I love but I have a thing about the green blues. Much as I love them, when I painted my powder room in Sea Salt, which looks lovely and is a great color, I think I shared that the reflection of the color on MOI when I look in the mirror is so very unflattering. I am really hesitant to use a green blue, although the difference is probably that the powder room has no windows and just the over vanity lights. The master bathroom has 2 windows, west and south facing and is quite bright.

Anyway now I will rethink Serenely because it was a color I kept going back to.

My front runners as of bedtime last night

Silver Strand which actually goes nicely with the tiles but I worry because it's really gray gray.

North Star which has been a front runner and is a good blue gray...... (and it's more intense Krypton)

Misty which is a nice gray blue ( we have a theme here)...

Wishful Blue which is a nice violet blue gray which I may be able to eliminate because it might be too purply. But it's nice for sure.

Your list was like hearing from old friends. Mountain Air was a contender but I think too blue for that room (but yes I am a blue blue lover) as is Sleepy Blue. uh oh just looked at Sleepy Blue again and it's got potential. I will look again at Rhinestone but I think it was too subtle .

    If you're still with me----

Since they (painters) haven't asked yet----I am still deliberating and these front runners are what I keep coming back to.

I'm pretty sure it will be North Star.

    North Star

    Silver Strand

    Misty

    Krypton

I’ve tested most of those colors on my walls before 😁. I would also choose North Star based on those options.

Just for fun, here are samples of your final four against a wall painted Serenely. You can see that Silver Strand leans quite green, Misty is more gray, and Krypton is pretty dark. North Star is the most blue, which sounds like what you’re looking for. I bet it will look great in your room.
