How much larger would the sconce/lantern have to be? Same with the house number. What color planters? Tapered and modern?

Also the house number can't be seen from street or walkway bc house it too far from road. I only put it there to hide the hole from the original. Owners belltone intercom

Thanks for the better pictures. Now we can see that your roof is black, there’s a lot of white trim, and your sidewalk is brick. Which is lovely, by the way.

A rule of thumb I have read on here is that your sconces should be at least 1/3 the height of your door. An average door is maybe 82”; this would require sconces more than 2’ tall. To follow along with that scale, I would estimate your house number plaque should be about 15” long with numbers similarly large.

Have you considered a much larger rug? Maybe jute?

I would stick with black planters, since your roof is black. The ones you have are barely big enough in comparison with the door + sidelights.

Do you use the rocking chair? If so, I might add another one, or hang a swing from the ceiling on the left side.


My initial thought was that the black chair and planters aren't very inviting. The planters are too small if they are the only thing on the porch, but anything much bigger limits seating space (if that's important to you).


A better option might be to pull out the shrubs on each side of the sidewalk, and put large planters there. Do you have a photo of the space in summer, so we can see what grows in front of the evergreens?

You've gotten good advice here. I'd also paint the downspout black so it fades from notice.

Move the rocking chair to the other side so it's more inviting, because it's nicely tucked into a corner instead of maybe rocking off the porch. Add a cushion. Add a useful table where the rocking chair is now. Larger house numbers. White flowers to echo your white paint. No wreath.
