Keep or remove shutters?

Thinking of putting our home on the market. Realtor suggested we remove all the shutters, paint the doors at the top black (but keep the tan trim around; same as the doors that are at the back of the house), paint the trim of the bottom windows black and paint the garage doors black. The inside of the house is more light and airy and I guess the outside doesn't reflect that. We are hesitant since we like the New Orleans style but I suppose it isn't for everyone. Any opinions? Stay, remove?? Thank you for any input.

I think it looks great the way it is. What's the realtor's reputation? Someone who has an eye for updates that more than pay themselves back? Or he doesn't pay attention to budgets? It's worth noting that realtor get paid by commission, so investments that raise the price of the house by less than the cost of doing them are a win for the realtor.

Have you removed a couple of the shutters to see how much fading has occurred? Faded sections on all windows would look really bad.

I would leave things as they are. Just make sure the exterior trim/doors/shutters are clean or freshly painted.

Your realtor is not doing their homework!

Your home is in the Monterey Colonial style & should be advertised as such.

Typical of that style is the balcony and shutters.

If your realtor doesn't get it, find a new realtor.

I agree that it looks wonderful the way it is. Here's an alternative for shutters and trim, but honestly I don't thing you need to change anything. Also, you have the black fence--one change begets another!

Love your front doors - they are beautiful! I am hoping that she didn't say to paint those.

A lot of people are anti-shutter right now. If you do take them off, keep them in case the new owners would like them (As a buyer, I would appreciate that.) Taking off the shutters would create a snowball effect- The house would lack contrast without the shutters so painting the windows would help define them. Then the doors would need to be painted to match.

I personally like the look of your house and think the shutters go well with the balcony, front doors, and lights.

Does any of it need to be painted (peeling, faded, etc.) or is it just for aesthetics? Seems like a lot of changes that a buyer may or may not like.

I’m always suggesting to remove shutters but they make sense on this house. I certainly don’t think they will inhibit a sale.

Leave the shutters and repaint anything that needs refreshing. Your house is lovely.

Removing the shutters can be worse. There can be darker spots in the brick (because the rest of the house is faded) and holes where they were secured.

I am doubting the skills of your realtor due to these suggestions. Have you interviewed more than one?

OK, so it's not a Modern Farmhouse exterior, but that is a plus in my book. It's very attractive and as everyone else said, the shutters make sense here. Since it's clean and well maintained it should sell in a very short period of time. Look at the average days on market in your area. I bet yours will go quicker than that. Pricing correctly is the most important thing. If you and your agent have reviewed all relevant, recent comps you should be able to price it correctly.

One more question. I know she is going to ask me to at least paint the garage doors black. Yay or nay?

Without a better picture..the garage brick looks different?.and it seems like with the change in roofline ….matching trim would create a more connective flow to the home..

Tho’ painting the garage doors black ..seems overkill to me..nevermind the heat magnet effect of overheating the garage..

I actually like the garage doors as they are. They blend into the brick, which gives the house more attention.

Glad to hear the shutters and doors are in pristine condition. Those details are important when selling. Anything that looks even a little shabby makes a buyer wonder what else was neglected. Your husband sounds like a keeper!

Personally, I would not like black garage doors. I agree with all those here that like your home as is. So do I - it’s absolutely lovely. Good luck with the sale!

This house in in New Oreleans so IMO it suits where you are. I have to say I do not love the brown wood door but I aslo would not bother changing anything . Price fairly and move on
