Should I paint the knotty pine beams and ceiling white?

This home is a vacation rental located on the west coast of South Africa. The cement floor requires painting, and it has been suggested that a light silvery grey colour would be ideal.

It has also been suggested that painting the beams and ceiling white would give the home a coastal vibe. The wall colour would probably also need to change. What recommendations do you have to improve the appearance of these spaces?

I have to agree. The beams and ceiling are beautiful, and no on the silver for the floor. A nice sand color would be perfect, since they need to be redone. The rest of the house looks pretty nice the way it is.

Wow, what a gorgeous home, and that VIEW!!! To die for!

I think it has a coastal vibe just as it is, like an old fishing cabin. Painting the wood white would devalue it in my opinion--and would render it much too white and cold. The wood adds a nice warmth without overpowering the space or making it feel dark. The bedroom is lovely as is.

What I would do if it were my home is to replace the living room furniture with lighter pieces, both in scale and color. A natural fiber rug (seagrass, jute or sisal) is perfect for a beach house.

I also might add linen or cotton sheer curtains to soften the look at the windows, and replace the blinds with natural wood, bamboo or grass shades.

Diana and I are having mind meld. Don't touch a thing in the bedrooms. They are magazine worthy. The ceilings everywhere are great. Your color scheme is fine as it is.

Your living room furniture is the only thing that is not beachy nor comfortable looking. They seem like tetris pieces and feel way too heavy for the space. And the blinds look a little old and lifeless. The Flintstones wall oven area makes me curious.

Lastly, really who cares about any of this with the view and beach access you have! Breath taking.

Simply thinking of painting them seems sinful to me.

If you can sit on the sofa in the living room and look out the windows and see ocean, and from the photo it looks close enough to also hear the ocean, that’s as “coastal vibe “ as you can get. Don’t get bogged down in beachy cliches.

Its 100% fabulous, but for the couches of pain : ) ! /the whole place feels like an ocean breeze, but for those. BTW , which seating group is presently there? I assume the navy.

Doubt this is a real concern. If you are trying to advertise--good luck.

The ceilings are beautiful - please don’t paint them! If the floors need work, I would not paint them but use a concrete stain. It will wear better. A nice sand color like suggested above.

Change the coffee table in the living room. Couches too, if possible.

I would book this in a heart beat - even without any changes.

I'll give a big, resounding NO to painting ceiling and beams. Both ceiling and beams seem to be in good shape and the finish looks good as well.

Thank you, everyone! Your feedback prevented the ceiling from being painted white!

The choice of charcoal-coloured fabric for the couches is due to the home's use as a holiday rental; the recommendation was that darker fabrics would conceal dirt and wear better.

The 'flintstone-oven area' likely exists because many homes in this town incorporate stonework. We are considering restoring it to a smooth surface. The term "Flintstones wall" amused me greatly; thank you for that one Kendrah :)

The couches shown in the latest photographs are those presently in the house. Additional advice would be welcome and valued.

Are you able to return the new charcoal colored furniture? There's a happy medium between likely to get ruined by renters and chain hotel bulletproof. That water color print on the chair is the odd man out right now.

If not, I would find some textured boho/modern pillows that incorporate the black, grey, tan and cream colors in the room.

I would do a sturdy wooden coffee table, same stain color as the new furniture legs (if you have to keep them) or copy the style and stain of the wood furniture in the bedroom.

Flintstones' furniture! That is very accurate and funny.

I felt pressured to paint the ceilings white as if it would solve all the problems in the house. Thanks to the feedback from all of you Houzzers, I have been able to make the decision not to paint with confidence. I have to admit, I felt a sense of relief too!

  • last year

No - you already have nice airy feeling in there cos ceilings are so high. If they were white youd just have a lot of white nothingness and all white can look kinda dingy and blah in its own way. T the wood of the furniture would not have any context. I dont know where your origins are, but in US the reaction against knotty yellow pine is because it was used as cheap panelling in the 1950s in often small ranch houses, and although it can have its charm it is not a particularly beautiful wood, and gets a dark dreary pumpkin color as it ages with the knots a dark black. THIS IS NOT THAT.

Don't know who is pressuring, but maybe a different designer is in order who appreciates and works with natural materials and sees how the ceiling wood complements the wood of furnishings. Perhaps a little light seaside blue or other color in bath and some other separated areas might be nice. The light pinks, purples, grays, beiges of a sea shell might provide some inspiration for a new pallette if you were to want more of a change.

BTW what kind of pine is it, is it really pine?

Jane, since this is a vacation rental, I would look on the common rental sites for your area to get an idea about what is popular and expected for the price you anticipate charging.

A renovation contractor is not a designer--I would not take his advice on decor. His job is to bring to completion the ideas of the designer. Everyone here has advised you to keep the wood natural--you would take all the character out of the space by painting them white.

"The renovation contractor expressed a dislike " Not his house, not his decision. If he gets paid for painting all that wood then he has a financial interest as well as a personal dislike. A skilled designer is able to set aside their personal quirks and creatively come up with fresh ideas in sync with what homeowner has expressed. The black does not work at all - a mid or darker blue or blue gray in harmony with ocean color would still be dark enough to do what you want it to do.

ETA = dont forget that wood is a color too, in this case a golden brown so choose any color or colors plural to be in sync with that. The natural aged tone you have is good, or if you reallllly want a change you could nudge it in a more grayed, weathered/bleached direction with a stain or toner.... but that takes time and skill (and money).

I've grown to love the color of the ceiling and I'm thrilled that it's not going to be painted white anymore.

"The light pinks, purples, grays, and beiges of a sea shell might provide some inspiration for a new palette." Thank you, Debbie, I like that idea!

I completely agree with you, Diana, and I especially want to thank you, Deegw, and Kendrah for your input so far. I've never been able to envision what the interior should look like, but thanks to your comments and inspirational photos, I now have a much clearer idea of the best way forward. I particularly like this idea: "linen or cotton sheer curtains to soften the look at the windows, and replace the blinds with natural wood, bamboo, or grass shades." Thank you, Diana, that was a game-changer for me!

P.S. I edited my previous post about the contractor to make it clearer

I'm pleased that you found my suggestions worthwhile, Neighbor Jane.

Regarding the bathroom tiles, they wouldn't be my choice, but redoing the bathroom will be fairly expensive. If you have the budget for a new bathroom, and it would help increase interest and/or price of your rental, then that's a whole other post.

Regarding the white upper cabinets in your kitchen--do you need them for storage? What would you replace them with? I think you need to figure out a long-term plan for the apartment if you're considering replacing bathroom tiles or kitchen cabinets.

Great choice!! Your home is open and bright it can carry the beauty of the natural wood. IDK why you would want the same tired white ceilings of everyone else when you have such a treasure,

Looks so much better! The light colored curtains now take a back seat so the view is the focal point.
