Help! What lighting would you pick over this kitchen island?

last year

We have an electrician coming tomorrow and as part of scope of work he will be replacing this track lighting above our island cart. We inherited it from previous owner and it has never worked, electrician deemed it a faulty lighting fixture and offered to replace if we pick out a new one. My husband and I picked a rattan pendant as that is more aligned with my “natural organic modern” style I admire, but made mistake of not taking it out of box until tonight! Yikes! It clashes with the cabinets, and I am not sure what (if anything) will look good with the existing task lighting over the sink. I am open to replacing that too. Help us come up with what light fixture you’d put in the space that would complement the existing design elements. Note: we actually don’t need the light for functional purposes, as the kitchen table light and task light provide plenty enough that we haven’t even noticed its absence, so luxury of choosing for looks not functionality. Based on reccomendations we will run to Lowe’s in the morning and get a fixture! Thank you so much!

Since the island is not permanent (i.e. you might move it some day) I would get a semi-flush mount, not a pendant. Something simple with white glass.

(While you're at Lowe's look at cabinet hardware!)

I have no problem with the rattan light. It adds nice texture to the space. Maybe get something else for the sink that works with it. Note, just because something is online at Lowe's does not mean that it will be in stock at a store in your area. Also, have you looked at Home Depot? I recall in the past being surprised that I like their lights better than Lowe's.

What exactly is the "scope of work" ? No to the rattan as it is not good when the island cart is not in place.

The hanging task light could be improved.

Don't select in a rush, cancel the electrician. A handyman can replace a light.

What style. What fixture? What is "the scope of work" for the space, as to this point, there is nothing "organic modern" about the kitchen.

probably better to replace what is over the sink. like shown below / install in the wall..not the ceiling. as far as the middle of the room...you probably need a plan for can lights, even a few, strategically placed on a dimmer. there is nothing there to accentuate with a pendant.

shown .... directional lights for the ceiling above and in front of fridge and on opposite side also.....two on each side.....total of four. they can get a dimmer installed. the idea that you dont need real general lighting is incorrect.

Semi flush mount from the ceiling since you don't have a permanent island. Then a smaller version over the sink and absolutely undercabinet lighting. The rattan pendant is too big and will be a magnet for grease and dust. Pick your semi flush mount in a finish that can easily be cleaned--glass, metal--someting like this modern shape only in all white and with a smooth finish. (This is linen, so a no-no in the kitchen. I can't quite find a similar white one right now.)

FWIW We had a kitchen with a single overhead light - we opted for a simple school house light from Rejuvenation - we had the fixture changed to increase the wattage and then put it on a dimmer so we could change the light level as needed (I would not do rattan, not enough light to be useful I think)
