We were thinking of chandelier as well but the room is so dark with the higher ceiling and we figured a chandelier install only will not make the room bright enough! Also during the hot days it feels like a fan is needed! Sigh hence now looking into nice ceiling fans w. Light instead of chandelier (even though I wanted a really nice light fixture)

Fan versus light is always an issue.

I draw my sketches in Microsoft Paint. Comes on any Windows computer. I select images that are appropriate, and have the background removed using RemoveBG which is available online. It's all just cut and paste. Very crude. I never learned Photoshop.

Maybe consider a fan that is more interesting to view.

If you keep the fan, and BTW it's not at the correct height) You could add downlights to supplement the light, however, sometimes when you have a ceiling fan below a downlight you end up with a strobe effect. See note below.

Strobing occurs whenever a ceiling fan blade crosses between a light source and your eyes. One way to avoid this effect is to space the downlights closer to the edge of the room and away from the fan.

I would not add recessed lighting. I would add great chandelier. Chandelier that has “down” lighting. Your wall color looks fairly dark? Consider lighter, more reflective color. Hang chandelier so bottom is approx 7.5’ to 8’ above floor depending on the shape of the chandelier. Beverly showed many good options. Layered lighting gives proper light where it is needed and creates depth and interest.

My great room is very similar with slanted side ceilings and a very high center. We have recessed lights on the slanted ceiling walls and have never used them. We also have a center fan that has a light, but never use the light.

I prefer lamps over ceiling lights, so if you’re going to add lamps near the couches and chairs, you shouldn’t spend a lot of money on recessed lights. Mainly, they were used by my painters.

I think I’m feeling an aversion to everyone’s suggestions about lamps, is because well I’ve never had lamps before ! And all I can think about is how lamps are pretty gloomy in hotel rooms and just brighten a certain part of the room 😔… ugh I need to see more visuals to actually figure out how to bring lamps into the picture!

@Beverly that strobing effect you were talking about makes a lot of sense! Now I have something new to worry about 😅 … what if the lights are mostly above the staircase

I am a huge fan of lamps, so I’m happy to help you find some you can love. The lighting from lamps is softer to me, so I am putting my prejudices out there.

Hi Rezo, We suggest two recessed lights on the slanted ceiling and two on the flat ceiling. Don't judge lamps by hotel lamps, which are often dreadful. I stayed in a Marriot last month where I'm pretty sure they were still using CFL bulbs, and it felt like living in a horror movie.

I'm not a fan of recessed lights in a a living area. Lamps plus a few good ceiling fixtures--semi flush or chandelier--give much better light. What if you put a nice chandelier in the center of the room, and put 2 new fans at the two ends of the room? Fans could be mounted higher, and white to blend in with the ceiling.
