I'd want about 18" in mass/width, ( not more than 21" and not less than 15") .

Pay attention to clearance from island top to BOTTOM OF pendant as you want about 36" clearance , meaning check stem/chain etc with your ceiling height.....for compatibility

@Jan - this is incredibly helpful!! We are trying to decide between the visual comfort 16” and 23” Elliott pendant. I just feel like the 23” will be HUGE. I am not looking for statement lighting, just a cool functional piece so I think the 16” is the way I’m going to go.

Sixteen is plenty!! It's a "solid!, so yes that would definitely feel too huuuuge at 23 inches. A solid visual is a completely different perception- like dragging a Christmas tree home and holy cow WTH was I thinking?!

Glass or something very open frame might be different, but not this.

Just tell him it is "center of the mounts is 20- 22 ( you pick ) inches in, from each left/right ends of the island"

and 36 inches bottom!! of the shade to the counter give/take an inch or whatever.

IMO the lighting needed to be decided before you did the giant island that is impossible to clean without a trip around it and a giant hood , open shelving and a sink directly across form a range all poodr design . IMO now a really nice linear fixture and where are the rest of the lights in that space

What a pretty kitchen; love your not giant island and the balance and symmetry with your vent hood and shelves! Some posters are always critical of sink and range across from each other, but I like mine that way both for the symmetry which pleases me and also because I can turn from the sink directly around to the range without extra steps. As long as the aisles are wide enough and there aren't four cooks at once bumping into each other...it works just fine. Those pendants will look great.
