The only vining squash I've grown for years and years in my small garden with permanent untilled beds (not raised) is butternut. I trim the growing tips once I see that I have a good fruit set. This keeps them within bounds and also makes it easier to examine the leaves for egg masses of squash bug--and this is absolutely manditory if I expect the plant to live to mature the fruit. For zucchini near daily checking for egg masses is required.
