Stained tower and hood with white perimeter cabinets?

Kitchen designer is recommending stained towers and range hood. Origami white painted perimeter cabinets. Island will be stained. Will this look good? He said it will warm up the space. Do I stick with a white hood? White towers? Rendering is below.

That rendition looks fragmented especially with transitional/traditional style cabinets. Since the island is stained, then do the perimeter cabinetry all painted. Of all the appliances in a kitchen, I would not choose to make the hood a statement feature.

what kind of wood? is this the stain color?

here's one example. you could do white vent hood w/a wood strip

    I like this walnut stain

No this is not the actual color. It’s close to a mid tone. It’s the brown stained sample in the picture.

It can work in some cases, but the circled areas make it look choppy/busy.

Also skip those spice pull-outs on either side on of the range. Most people find them annoying to use. Use that space to make your drawer stacks wider.

I think stained cabinets are too narrow to look proportional to the rest. Would just do all white including hood.

I don’t like that at all, but it’s not my kitchen. Perhaps you are asking because you don’t love it either? Just tell him you think it looks off. A better way to do two toned kitchens is 1. perimeter cabinets one color, island another, or 2. upper cabinets one color, lowers another.

large hood is dominant focus. the entire wall of cabs needs better balance and adjusting..

these walls handle the big hood better/ take note. full height glass doors to balance the big hood...cabs all one color/ a rather simple style..........island in a contrast

this one leaves wall voided of cabs which renders a cleaner / breathable look.

what if you did this instead of the narrow wood cabs?

or, made the white cabs thinner, wood tower cab wider

kind of like this example on the right (but w/your white cab, not black)

or, do upper wood stain cabs, some w/glass, and leave some room around the vent hood

    This is my favorite

These are all such good ideas…I am so far along that I already gave approval for the layout. Was just deciding on colors and finishes. I think white all around may be the best option considering they already started.

Or possibly the hood stained and these upper section stained. Towers white?

If you’re limited on changes at this point then I think going all white is a good idea - we rarely regret going simpler

I’d say no to a stained vent hood. It seems like it should be white in this rendering. Towers and island stained would be fine, but not the hood. I think the cabinetry would look great done in all white as well. Just my opinion.

FWIW, my spice pullouts on either side of my cooktop are my favorite feature of my kitchen and hold my most used cooking items. I keep all my oils, vinegars, and liquid seasonings on one side and all my spices on the other. I have a lot of stuff in them and everything is close at hand and easy to find.

Like BirchPoint, I really like my spice pullouts. I also agree that all of your perimeter cabinetry should be white. The rendering looks choppy.

Either all upper cabinets white and all lowers stained, or just the islands stained. Too much busyness in your rendering.

Consider just using stained accents on top. We have a stained band around the bottom of our hood and stained shelves.

Spice pullouts are the worst. You can only see the stuff on top and then you have to look from the side and squat down to find stuff on lower shelves. Fine if you only use a handful of spices and they all fit on top but not fine otherwise.

IMO way too much going on on that wall so keep the hood the same as the white cabinets and paint those goofy shelf ones the same too .You should have also raised those wall cabinets up a bit and planned for actual usable upper cabinets or at least glass ones for those tint ones. Where was you KD in this mess .

@Patricia this is a rendering and not an exact picture. The ceiling are 10ft and the cabinets are plenty high enough. The upper cabinets would be as usable as possible. They are not tinted. Thanks for your feedback

I like the stained hood, but not the towers I think towers make the space look too choppy. I'd do the white cabinets all the way across.

I would eliminate the towers altogether. Just a straight line of upper cabinets across the wall. All in the same plane, eliminating the innie & outie puzzle pieced crown in favor of a straight piece of crown.

Range hood should be 6" wider than the cooker. For myself, I would use a stainless hood--easy to clean & much less risk of damage from grease cutting cleaners.

I love my pullout next to my cooker. The pullout is where I keep oils, vinegars, steak sauces...Mine has an optional middle shelf that I removed so I could fit tall items like bottles of cooking oil. Visibility is not a problem. Agree that lower pull outs are not a good solution for spice storage.

I would also reconsider the waterfall counter on second island. Waterfalls look best with very modern minimalist kitchen designs, which your kitchen isn't.

The towers waste valuable counter space. The hood looks small and doing it in contrasting material accents that. A stainless steel range would look better.

A rendering is IMO what this will look like and with a 10' ceiling you could have astack of cabinets that are both useable and look much better. I dislike cabinets that sit on the counter and I agree waterfall islands belong in very contemporary kitchens your's is not .

I'm a yes for the spice/oil/cooking things pullouts too, AS LONG AS they are wide enough to be useful. Like 12" minimum. Agree that all white uppers works best here.

After looking at the rendering of the entire kitchen, honestly, I would fire this 'designer' and start over.

I get the impression that the 'designer's' chief goal here is to sell cabinets & labor, as in 'oversell'.

The disjointed end wall with the tower cabinets and the basically useless bottom drawers in the towers...(what are the inside dimensions of those drawers?). Towers that cost a lot more than a standard cabinet while robbing your countertop. Staggered depths that will cost another stick or two of crown molding & a lot more labor to install. Two islands instead of one. One with a $$$waterfall top that makes no sense with traditional cabinetry. What is the point of the silly diagonally divided cabinet over on the beverage fridge wall? And a wholly impractical wood hood over the cooker. The most difficult to clean and easiest to damage material in the nastiest, dirtiest part of a kitchen. And essentially greasy tinder over a heat source.

A lot of dislike of towers here, apparently. I have one in my kitchen and I love it. I keep my keurig and toaster on the bottom and coffee and supplies above. I don't understand the comments about taking up valuable counter space because my coffee pot and toaster would be on the counter anyway. And I don't have so much clutter on my counters.

why not paint it white but stain the strip along the bottom? that way you get both

To give some context that range wall is 18ft. It certainly will not be as compact as it appears. Counter space will be sufficient. The range hood is 54in wide (48 range). The ceiling are 10ft and the cabinets will go to the ceiling (with crown). Thank you to those that provided reasonable advice.

@ci_lantro the drawer inside dimensions are 19 (it’s a 24in) wide cabinet. I can probably store all my extra cash in it ;) Geez! Apparently white kitchen hoods are not common where you are or you haven’t seen a little thing named Pinterest. The silly diagonal cabinets will hold all my wine! I would say thank you for your comments but I would be lying.

It’ll be fine all white I’m glad you were able to make that change. Best of luck!

CC, not the best spot to store wine. the heat that rises from around the stove isn't a good thing. just sayin.

Beth, the cubes are across the kitchen on the refrigerator section :)

Wow! Nice big kitchen space you have there!

I like the idea from Beth of just doing a strip of wood at the bottom of the hood. I think having white on the majority of the hood looks better since it connects to the white upper cabinets flanking it. It looks less choppy as some have mentioned

I was also wondering your thoughts on doing the second island for seating painted white. If you get bar chairs that have wood, they would contrast nicely against the white.

    Similar to this kitchen…

I know you said things are pretty much set as far as the layout, so please ignore this suggestion if it is not an option. I would normally not say anything, but I just felt I should mention this one thing since I really do think it would make a huge difference in the functionality of your kitchen.

You have a very large kitchen, but there is only one sink to share for all of the kitchen activities which need to use water.

If you added a second prep sink to the main island, it would make prepping on the island so much nicer since you would have direct water access right in your main prep zone. You would not drip water or meat juice across the isle each time you bring your washed items from the perimeter sink over to the island to prep facing your guests. I happen to have this exact problem and it is very annoying. I wish I had added a prep sink to my island when we remodeled.

You said your range wall is 18’ so that means the distance from the fridge to the one sink is going to be somewhere around 16’. I believe the NKBA says 9’ is the max recommended between the fridge, sink, and stove of the cooking triangle. Plus, you also have to manuever around the barrier island. An island prep sink would make that work triangle work so efficently.

If you don’t like the idea of a prep sink on the island, would you possibly consider a small bar sink next to wine fridge centered under the wine rack? Having a small sink closer for making coffee, mixing drinks, smoothies, snacks, etc… would be convenient.

Well, no matter what you decide, I am sure you will love your beautiful new kitchen! Enjoy! 💗

    @ci_lantro the drawer inside dimensions are 19 (it’s a 24in) wide cabinet.

    19W x ___H x ___D? Do you know?

I’m laughing at myself (again) after reading rebunky’s post. Our kitchen is not as large as yours, and we added BOTH a prep sink and a bar sink at the coffee bar (in addition to the cleanup sink by the dishwasher) and I am so happy to have them. We had a bunch of 11 year olds over for a birthday party and even one of them said “how many sinks do you have?!” lol. But we are a family of 6, and our kitchen is so very pleasant to use!

@rebunky Thank you very much for the feedback and suggestions! We actually have a coffee and appliance pantry (not pictured here) that has a sink! It’s by the beverage area.

I typed up a fairly detailed comment - and then it didn’t post. I hate when that happens!

I think that your rendering makes it difficult to see how the wall will actually look - because it makes it look like the hood doesn’t project out enough from the cabinets installed next to it.

You’ve received several great suggestions - however, since your plan is set, you aren’t able to implement many (most) of the ideas provided. However, I think that your kitchen will still look very nice when finished (with just a few tweaks).

I actually really like towers/countertop cabinets. If you didn’t have good sized landing spots/prep areas on both sides of your range, I would understand how they can be an issue. However, you will have more counter space than many (most?) kitchens posted on here - even with the tower cabinets. You have 84” of countertop on the right and left sides of your range. Once you subtract the width of your tower cabinet, you’ll have 60” - on EACH SIDE. That’s A LOT more than recommended by NKBA.

Also, I disagree with someone’s comment about how a vent hood should not be made in a manner that causes it to be something that might draw your eyes to it. I’ve seen many custom vent hoods that are very attractive - and have been purposely configured in order to be a focal point on the wall.

I do think that your countertop cabinets are too narrow compared to the cabinets next to them (that are painted white) - and would look better if they were painted white also. I think the tower/countertop cabinet in jkt107’s kitchen looks nice painted white (as the other upper cabinets + vent hood) - it also would have looked a bit off if it had been finished in stained wood based upon its narrower width.

I like the vent hood’s in Beth H.’s example photos - many of them have open space next to them (or open shelving). Beth’s idea re: adding stained wood along the bottom of the vent hood is also a nice way to pull some of the stained wood on the island onto the perimeter wall area.

The waterfall countertop on the second island seems a bit too modern for your kitchen (based upon your other selections). I am surprised that some people suggested a stainless steel vent hood - I think those were everywhere starting around 2010 + they’ve always seemed modern and/or industrial looking to me.

rebunky has a good point re: adding another sink if possible. It seems like many people automatically add a prep sink - even when it’s not necessary. However, one would be appropriate in your kitchen.

Then again, what do I know??!!?!? I have no special expertise re: designing kitchens 😂

In any event, please post a photo of your kitchen when your renovation has been completed. I would love to see how it looks when finished!
