Critique my primary bathroom floor plan

We’re converting our current walk in closet into a primary bathroom. We made the floor plan ourselves so we’re looking for an expert eye on it.

Are there any obvious concerns with the fixture placement or layout? Is there a more optimal one I’m not seeing?

We’ll have a walk in shower, floating toilet and a dual sink vanity (72-86 inches long). We were thinking of adding some built in storage if space permits.

If we were talking about two doors that're used constantly -- like the closet and bathroom -- I'd say NO, separate them. But that's not the case: An attic door is used rarely, so no problem from a functional standpoint -- and I don't think it's a problem in terms of looks either.

Any thoughts on this door or the bathroom door swinging in vs out?

Since the door placement isn't definite yet, no.
We are very much debating the length of the shower. Aesthetically it may make sense to extend the shower the full length, but that could be roughly 7ft long.

7' is too long for a shower, but that empty odd space at the end of the shower isn't good either. You could do several different things here, but leaving it empty isn't the right choice.

Towels we are hoping to squeeze hooks or towel bar if possible between shower and bathroom entrance on that wall.

Doesn't look like enough space. If the towels are all bunched up, they won't dry.

Here is another idea, but it requires walking through the bathroom (would not bother me as long as there is a toilet room)

This is a neater, more expected classic two-sided layout -- an improvement over the clunky original drawing. A couple thoughts:

- I'm ambivalent about closets-opening-from-bathrooms, but -- if you care -- could the closet door be placed by the entrance door /at the butt-end of the arrow leading into the room? This would also give you more vanity space.

- With the current vanity space and repetitive sinks, you have little space left for drawers at the vanity. Duplicate sinks are of little value, whereas storage at the sink is very useful.

- I hate toilets crammed into small, dark closets.

- This layout would allow bathroom light to "spill out" onto the bed, possibly waking a sleeper. I have this layout now, and it drives me crazy.

- This gives you a more reasonable, standard-sized shower.

It would be helpful to include the existing floor plan, with more of the adjacent rooms shown, any windows, where is optimal for plumbing to go down, and if it's a 1/2 story attic any slopes of roofs and kneewalls.

Remodels are hard, and you're "not there yet" ...

- I like the bed placement. Tucked into a little alcove, it looks cozy ... and plenty of space for a large nightstand on each side.

- The closet door should be near the attic stairs door (you won't use the attic door much anyway) and not near the bed.

- I don't like the idea of entering the bathroom through the other closet.

- I do like that the bathroom light won't spill out onto the bed.

- Why the little empty spot at the end of the shower? Why not expand the shower to the far end of the bathroom ... or reduce the bathroom size? Or were you thinking of a "tall pantry" cabinet in this space? Or a set of open shelves opening towards the hallway /closet?

- I don't see an obvious spot for shower towels to hang ... remember you want them to be reachable from the shower door.

- The bench may need to go at the other end of the shower ... as presented, it may block your door. You could go with a fold-up seat, but the other end of the shower is still better.

- No need for duplicate sinks. Instead, go with one nicely done sink /a good bank of drawers on each side.

- Where will your bathroom trash be placed?

- Where the toilet is placed, you'll have a view of your seated self in the vanity mirror.

Really need the existing plan for this area -- really for the entire floor.

Is this 1st or 2nd floor?

What is the exterior like?

You show only one window -- will there be more?

This is the top floor of the house so no adjacent rooms. Also, there is a window in the bedroom on the right wall that we didn’t add in mainly bc I’m more interested in advice on the bathroom layout.

We are very much debating the length of the shower. Aesthetically it may make sense to extend the shower the full length, but that could be roughly 7ft long. We are not sure if that’s too long and having a bench on the end is almost too far away?

Towels we are hoping to squeeze hooks or towel bar if possible between shower and bathroom entrance on that wall. That may be a vote for flipping the bench as you mentioned. Unless you see a better spot.

In terms of a waste basket, hoping this could be tucked by the toilet.

Thoughts and opinions welcomed.

I like the first option you posted - you have a door to your bathroom, separating it from the closet, so that's not a worry. I think you have plenty of room to add in a linen closet next to the the shower, configure a better place to hang towels, or even switch the wall placement to utilize the space better, etc. An 86" vanity is plenty of room to have two sinks and 2 stacks of drawers for each sink.

I do agree you may need to think about the bench and shower door placement - those may require some changes.
