First apartment advice

last year

Recently moved into my first apartment and I'm looking to make the living/kitchen and bedroom feel more lively and homey. I'm currently thinking of getting a bookshelf where the Home Depot box is, adding some sort of artwork above the tv, and filling the rest of the top of the kitchen cabinets with plants. Any advice would be greatly appreciated especially with lighting since the place doesn't get any direct sunlight.

Andrew, congrats on your new apartment. It looks pretty darn nice for a first apartment - you even have a balcony!

You're more likely to get help here decorating it if you create a floor plan of the space, including doors and windows. Then answer a few questions. Do you need a place to eat? Do you work from home? How's the storage situation? Hopefully some talented people will chime in with good suggestions for you. Enjoy your new space.

No - to the bookcase. Are you getting a larger tv?

Great start. Move the sofa so it is centered on the rug. Get some kind of a console for the TV that will hold all the stuff from the white thing. Try the BESTA system from IKEA. You can purchase components to configure for your layout.

Congrats on your new apartment. May we have some measurements of the rooms that include windows, doors, and openings? that would help a lot. Then we would be able to give you some accurate suggestions for where to place your furniture. Best wishes.

I just set up one of my kids in his first apartment last week!

Obviously they didn't give you enough kitchen storage. I would get rid of the open shelf unit with the oils and get something taller, with doors, from Ikea. Get something close in color to the kitchen cabinets. Having all those items behind doors will make the space feel less cluttered. Maybe fill that whole wall with Besta, with a low part to place the TV and a taller part close to the kitchen to store all the oils, etc.

Hello Andrew, Sure hope you are still checking in with us. If so, please give us a nod and we will post a 3D rendition with suggestions for your consideration. Best Wishes, MAE

Instead of a bookcase, get a long low cabinet piece to set your TV on and then you will have additional storage. Unless of course you have a lot of books you need storage for.

Rendition with suggestions for your consideration.

    1. 1. Move the couch to the opposite side of the room. It opens the room up.
    2. 2. Buy a long low TV console with storage. You can use it as a pantry instead of the little white plastic shelf.
    3. 3. Some wall art as previously suggested and mirrors to reflect the natural light back into the room.
    4. 4. One floor lamp, one small side table and one tall dining table with tall stools.

Hi everyone! Andrew what are the measurements to bedroom and kitchen living space? Are you able to rearrange the cable wires to the other side of the wall? Do you always eat at home? Do you cook your own dinner? How often? How much time do you spend on your computer or watch tv? What is your style?

Hey everyone sorry for the super late response. First of all, thank you everyone! These comments have been amazing and they have given me many great ideas. I have attached a rough floorplan for the living and bedroom below.

Some more info about me, I work mostly in office but occasionally I take some work home with me hence the desk. I often use it and the TV and would prefer to keep both out of the bedroom as much as possible.

I have a foldable table set on the patio that I often eat at, I plan on moving that inside once the weather forces me to.

Storage is super tight in this apartment and has mostly been relegated to filling the bedroom closet, I will most likely be getting a BESTA for the pantry storage and moving whatever does not fit from that in whatever places I can squeeze. I have a decent amount of books but I'm thinking of relocating that shelf idea into the bedroom instead.

The desk is the only thing that has to stay in the same location due to the only cable for the router being behind the couch, other than that rearranging is completely doable.

Also, the length of the fridge to the right wall is 108" not 90".
