If you walk was painted a dark steel blue color the white pieces on the shelves would really pop.

Is it too late to return them and rethink this? Sorry to be blunt. I don’t think wood color goes with the rest of or furniture. Also, the symmetry in terms of duplicated objects, and shear quantity of vases and objects seems contrived. I don’t mean to be unpleasant, just hoping you might be able to change this out.

Well, many of the decor items are white— are they dear to you? Or chosen because you were think, white, neutral. The white china works well in the dark cabinet, but are lost agate the white wall, as you have perceived.

But, if you were thinking of gradually collecting items with more more color and warmth, some shine like bronze or brass, echoing some of the room decor , you could leave the wall as-is. Also, I think this is a situation where some decorators’ advice for fewer, more substantial objects would work well. Or grouping some of them. There used to be a recent book, can’t remember decorator/author, who covered that topic well. About our tendencies to get small objects because they’re cheaper AT THE TIME, but buy more of them instead of saving/ focusing on larger more substantial/ meaningful pieces. But work not go out to discount store & buy all new!

If interested, I wanted to comment on how the accessories look. I know it would have taken a lot of time choosing pieces and experimenting, so hate to say….

Having both sides basically being mirrored images of each other, similarity of objects and all being lined up, plus the numerous pieces in the centre have created a feeling of a store‘s display.

If it helps, don’t duplicate each side or line up pieces, reduce some of the smaller pieces and aim for a layered look and so that each shelf has its own unique feel.

I love all the comments. The glasscloth wallpaper is something I had thought of, so thank you for sending me a pic. Unfortunately, I cannot return these pieces - all I could find at the time that fit the entire wall. Maybe, the initial idea of buying light decorating pieces was not a good one, but we wanted to lighten up the shelves. I do have a lot of smaller thrifted and store bought items and would love to incorporate them in the decor. How do I do that?

Emily, thanks. I agree that a pop of color would highlight the items but I would hesitate to add one more color to this open area and I have nothing blue.

Well I was thinking of something that would read more as a neutral than another pop of color. Your accessories would be the one to pop. The dark blue would be a nice compliment to orange in the room and it looks like you have a bit of blue in the pottery piece. I’m picturing something like this blue. SW sea serpent or inkwell might be nice colors to try out.

Hi Sandra. Just wondering if your shelves can be pushed flush against the back wall? Might make them feel more grounded. Maybe try clearing all the objects from the top of your credenza and leaving it bare - even under the two shelving units. Don’t have the decor mirror imaged. Maybe try all the books stacked on one shelf to add some solid height. Then play around with your larger ceramic pieces. The orange piece you have on your side table might look great on one of the shelves. You could even have one single larger piece on a shelf or two. Bigger and fewer items with some negative space!

The boxes on your coffee table and orbs under your TV might be great for the shelves. Mis it up but keep it simple. You have great things to work with!
