Help with new furniture set up

last year

So got a new sofa and 2 chairs. Need help with a rug ( pic is 8x10 too small but love the pattern), coffee table and perhaps an ottoman for my fun chair. I don’t even know where to begin but any insights would be greatly appreciated! Yes I lost the battle with the recliner……my fun chair is making rug selection tricky!

I think the accessories on the mantle are not attractive and would suggest an arrangement that is less symetrical.

You can get by with the 8x10 rug. Here are rugs that are the next size up for reference.

I would add at least another foot on to the downrod of your ceiling fan

You only have half as many curtain panels as window coverings as required, and I would have mounted them closer to the ceiling. The desired appearance is to have folds in your drapery panels and you don't have that.

Thank you so much! I love and will implement all your ideas. Your second Calvin Klein rug was on my list! The 8x10 rug feels like it just doesn’t anchor the room. Leaning towards 9x12 but just love this current rug, which I cannot find in a 9x12. It’s a Nourison wool. Thank you so much for your time. What shape coffee table would you recommend?

If I keep the 8x10 rug where do I put the chairs? I keep moving them around and never seems right

The truth is that the chairs will never feel 100% right. When people suggest you get a sofa and 2 chairs for a living/family room, it usually means that the two chairs will be a matching pair.

Hard to tell from just a photo, but could you get a second patterned chairs to place next to the one you already have? The recliner would then sit by itself on the other side.

Sofa, 2 chairs and recliner would look similar to this.

IMO your sofa is too far away from the TV wall. If you follow the plan below, you might be able to still use the 8x10 area rug.

Please note that Nourison is notorious for using Viscose in their rugs to add 'sparkle' to the rugs. There are almost no rug cleaners who will agree to clean a rug that has viscose fiber. It's a form of rayon and tends to turn brown after it becomes wet. Spot cleaning on a rug with viscose is not possible.

I do like the idea of adding another chair. There is room so I will play with that idea! I love your floor plan but there is no room for end tables on 8x10. Right now I have about 7” on each side. Maybe 9x12?

    Just no more room

Update. Ordered another chair. I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like just one. Plenty of room so all good!

Thank you all so much for your input. I so appreciate your expertise! I have ordered another chair and current rug is going back. Love the coffee table suggestions as well. Still struggling with a soft muted rug to pull it all together so any suggestions greatly appreciated! Again thank you all - you make such a difference!

Ps. Redoing mantle next week. Will follow suggestion no 2! So glad I just retired!
