Help with Nightstands

last modified: 11 months ago

It's time for us to get new nightstands. These are undersized, plus they're pretty cheap from target and were dropped by our movers (3 years ago) so they're damaged. I've been struggling to find some that I like. I really want wider nightstands, around 36", but I don't want them too tall for our bed. The current nightstands are 26" tall x 24" wide.

I'm also wondering about color. I've been looking at white but also wonder if a light wood would look better?

Also I know the lamp shades should be lighter but the white ones I had were too stark. Our lamps, mirror, and vase on the dresser are all mother of pearl.

Our bed is a Cal King and the wall the bed is on is 18'-0" long.

a light woodtone would warm things up a bit. I like the lamp shades.

do you need more light? why a white shade? do you need more light? bump up the light bulb.

So in the first image I lowered the art over your bed.

I enlarged the white cabinet and centered the lamp under the window.

Is that the look you're going for?

You could select a rattan faced cabinet if you want a coastal style.

The mirror over your dresser is too small in scale. I enlarged this image by 25%

I would not have vases on both sides of the dresser.

I'd select a thin buffet lamp for one side and have the vase on the other side.

IMO a bit more interesting bedding and then pull that dark wood form the dresser over to the bed for night tables I would not do a light colored wood.

I’d try to tie in the black dresser (via the nightstand hardware) and head towards a cream or sand colored tone and bedding will have a big influence.

For 36” wide i would look at three drawer dressers. we purchased copeland furniture 3drawer dressers as night stands. not inexpensive but well made and fit perfectly as a wider nightstand. lots of nice wood options

The rattan looks good, but the dimension in the mock up must be off. they indicated their current ones are 24” wide. the target ones are 26. so they will not be as wide as the mock up appears.

    Thanks everyone for your input!

I feel like maybe I need a different (higher) bed in order to get a nightstand as large as I want? I was contemplating doing something different with that anyway, as I am now learning why upholstered (fabric) headboards are a bad idea. Does anyone have a recommendation for a headboard/bed frame that will keep with the coastal design we have?

Or how much taller the nightstand could be before it starts looking out of place?

@BeverlyFLADeziner I really like the charging one you posted with the open shelf - just concerned about clutter.

I was looking at 3 drawer dressers but still feeling like it's hard to find one short enough and wide enough. I could leave the legs off of them if I find one that works that has detachable legs...

I had found this dresser from Tommy Bahama but it's $$$ and rather tall (32").

I also found this one. I can't tell if I like the wood in this picture but this one would be 30" if I remove the legs (they look removable). 4" higher still seems like it would be too much next to our bed?

Or this one which also looks like it has removable legs (36" tall will legs):

Responding to a few things: our bed is not completely made in this picture (sorry - it rarely is). We have a duvet cover it's just in the wash. But it is a white with a waffle pattern. The bed is styled with the ines pillow cases (one pictured), two white accent pillows, and a large light blue lumbar pillow (you can see it in the corner), along with a light blue quilt. There is only a little bit of pattern but I prefer the simplicity of it.

The dresser is actually painted blue, not black. Sorry the picture wasn't brighter. That is a custom refinished piece so it will be staying.

Regarding the lamp shade, on a previous dilemma I had someone tell me they were the wrong color and I needed white. If they look fine as they are then great!

@Maureen do you have the link to the image you posted? I would like to reverse search that nightstand!

Sorry I can’t find the site, but hope this reference helps. If you like the look, search weathered large nightstands and it’s good to compare as prices will really vary.

Well, we changed things up a bit... It was much easier to find a wood nightstand than white! Plus we painted the wall! We actually also ordered a new bed frame too, which is coming this week. But nightstands are in and they are SO. MUCH. BETTER
