Ideas for office background

last year

I would like to upgrade my background so it is more professional and appealing. I am considering moving the plant to the other side of my chair and putting some floating shelves where the plant is located and I am going to be painting the wall a more gray tone of beige. Finally, I was also considering getting a more trendy/light plant (6 or 7' olive tree from Amazon). Any other ideas? Note, I think a rectangle picture would've been better but I really like this one and they don't have rectangle options available so I'm working with it. Open to all ideas though. I could move this one to another part of the office if it will make a huge difference.

if it were me, I would probably skip shelves as they can be hard to do well, I think art and your tree sounds nice - clean and simple works well

Why not just do a virtual one if this is for Zoom or other meetings . I prefer to not show my house to everyone on zooms If this space is what you want I do not like the wall color or fake plants . I agree no shelving it always looks cluttered maybe a larger piece of art too.

For any comment, there's not much to be seen of the room from this one picture...

@Patricia Colwell Consulting, what ideas do you have then?

I do not like the fake backgrounds too much. They work but they're cheesy. I work with a lot of c-level executives who don't have fake backgrounds.

One important thing that should be considered is how the paint color looks against your skin. And how the shirt color you have on looks with paint color & your skin. Really! Sounds silly simple but watch a few of the talking heads on TV news when it’s someone from an outside the studio location that looks like their home office. If you have shelves, one needs to be ’careful’ about display items. There’s a reason some have their books with the spines facing the wall.

Instead of floating shelves, I would install a narrow white bookcase with simple organized decor such as shown below.

Paint the wall a lighter colour, more in a light taupe, something like this...

Thank you! What do you think about book-cases on both sides of the painting? Or, do you think I just move the painting somewhere else? I will be updating the paint color to something less yellow. The paint we used for our kitchen was Modern Grey and I think we'll use that here too.

There are quite a few different feature walls people have created that started with simple Billy bookcase(s) from IKEA (I've never been to IKEA - but my understanding is that there have been more Billy bookcases sold than any other piece of furniture in the world). While I'm sure that many people simply use the bookcase "as is" - there have been a lot of "hacks" of the Billy bookcase.

Many people have turned them into "built-in" bookcases + many have painted them and some have changed the look of them completely. They seem like a pretty inexpensive way to transform the wall in your office.

All of the following are IKEA Billy bookcases:

You could have bookcases flanking each side + use your painting in the middle - similar to some of the examples I've included.

The photo below shows what a big impact adding some paint + simple trim will have on a couple plain Billy bookcases:

Here is an example where someone had three Billy bookcases on a wall - and by adding some paint and trim (including some simple arches) turned them into a custom looking built-in feature:

There are MANY examples of "Billy Bookcase hacks" if you do a quick search.

You can also do a lower bookcase (higher than the desk) something like this...

FYI often you will never know if what you see is fake or real if it is done right. As for your space it is a shell with no clue as to your style , what kind of businees you are in so the sky is the limit . I need a lot more info from you but what you have right now is so much worse than a nice fake background . Poor Dani who has never entered Ikea . The Billy has been around for ever for a reason as you see in the pics but we need more info about you and your business . That is how you design a background either real or fake.. BTW almost all backgrounds you asee on the news are fake .I like them best when they have some connection to your business so info please or we just keep guessing.
