The table will be a harder find, so suggest purchasing before deciding on the chairs.

With 3 teenagers and space needs, I’d choose a rectangle a big larger than what you have, then you can eliminate chair on end (having to be pulled away) and you can then fit one more person across the back. Ensure the legs are sturdy but not bulky for ease of getting in/out. Love this table for your kitchen.

Suggest black chairs vs potentially having 3 shades of grey and a contrast might be more interesting.

Sorry I hate that type of dining space and honestly why don't the boys sit at the counter and you could do a nice chair or two there for a nice cup of coffee .or glass of whatever with a friend while you cook. Our 3 boys ate breakfast at the counter for years and we all dined in the DR

I love the nook and really like the Saarinen tulip idea - and depending on where you purchase, there are a ton of durable top options, including laminate and quartz.

I actually like the existing chairs. Maybe I'm missing something but I'm not seeing how those could possible scrape the walls regularly unless your kids are fencing with them? In any event, it's easier and cheaper to fix scuffed walls than stained fabric so not sure upholstered chairs are a good idea.

Will chime in and say that I like the existing chairs.
