Cove OR Crown...room by room

Hello detail people!

Happy New Year!

I wanted to run something by some of you. I'm looking at an issue that I didn't see on paper, and now it looks hinky in execution and I'm thinking of another solution.

The living room and foyer have higher ceilings, and I went with 4.5" crown mouldings, but now I'm looking at the Kitchen and Master, and I'm wondering if the 3.5" cove moulding instead of crown, is going to give a cleaner, airier look for those rooms. (None of it is stained -- it's all painted mouldings.)

Is it necessary to keep one moulding style consistently throughout the entire house?

I'm actually thinking of shifting to a slimmer (3.5") cove profile for the walkout basement level, as well, to have a more modern look than was originally the plan.

Style and size are two different factors. You should keep to a similar style and level of formality in the house. So any of the classical styles of crown molding would work in a home that calls for that--a Colonial revival, Tudor, Italianate, Queen Anne, Greek Revival, and the like. That type of trim would be inappropriate in a (true) farmhouse, Cape cod, rustic cabin, midcentury modern or Shingle style. Size depends on the ceiling height, which, if it's different in different rooms, needs to be scaled appropriately. And vaulted ceilings shouldn't have any ceiling trim at all.

The two 1830s-40s houses I lived in had ceiling moldings that varied by ceiling height and complexity , because the ceiling on each floor was lower than the one below. But they all had the same general shape. Is there a smaller crown that is similar to that used in the LR and foyer?

We have no context so how can we help. Waht is the style you want in the home ? Post some pics here in a comment DO NOT start another post . Waht do you mean by high ceiling ? Too much missing info to answer .

Generally we suggest keeping the same style of ceiling moulding in our homes.
