Can I change my fireplace to a two-side?

Hey, here is a photo of my fireplace in the living room, behind it is the dining room. I am thinking about opening it from the other side too! Is it possible?

Nope. It wouldn't draw right. Two sided fireplaces are expensive PIAs that eliminate any privacy between rooms as well.

You can't simply open up the other side to turn your regular fireplace into a two sided fireplace.

My understanding is that it would require some reconstruction in order for it to be operated as a double sided fp - more than just creating an opening - the structure of the fp would need to be changed. Ripping out your current fireplace + replacing it with a new two sided prefab fireplace might be the best way to change it from one sided to two sided.

I have a two sided fireplace - it's between my living room and study. When I built the house, I also had a wood burning fireplace added to my kitchen + a gas vented fireplace put in my primary bedroom (my previous house didn't have a fireplace - so, I went a bit crazy when designing this house!)

The two sided fireplace was also wood burning - but we recently converted it by adding gas logs (about three years ago). The reason was that the draw wasn't good with the glass doors open - the only way it worked well was with both sets of glass doors closed (apparently, they were special glass doors - because the fireplace could be used with both sets of glass doors closed). It didn't draw well if one set of doors was closed and the other set open either.

Originally, I was going to try to have stationary glass added on the study side - so, you'd be able to see it, but smoke wouldn't escape like it did when the doors were closed on that side - (while open on the living room side). Adding gas logs allows us to operate it with both sides open without any smoke.

I really like having the two sided fireplace between the living room and study - it doesn't cause any privacy issues (unlike the two sided fireplace that my daughter and SIL had in their apartment in downtown Denver - it was between their living room and primary bedroom - which was fine most of the time since it was only the two of them - but not when someone came to visit for a weekend).

Thank you for the detailed explanation! This is wood burning fireplace and I am not sure whether we can convert it to gas since all the appliances in the house work with electricity, so I assume there is no gas (we have not moved in yet)

Converting to gas logs was easy for us because the fireplace already had a gas starter for the wood logs.

    Is your heat electric also?

    I guess so!

That's a prefabricated zero-clearance metal fireplace with a round metal chimney that is framed into the wall with 2x4 construction. If you want to convert it to a see-through fireplace, you will need to remove the fireplace along with the chimney and install a see-through zero-clearance fireplace.

See through wood burning fireplaces tend to have problems with smoke since air movement from room to room can go through the fireplace causing a puff of smoke to blow into one of the rooms.

You may want to consider a gas fireplace instead of wood burning in order to eliminate potential smoke problems.

You are in the $10K plus realm to get this done depending on how difficult it is to get to the vent pipe.
