Looks very traditional, the White suites the current style of furniture.

At first glance, I would do a major EDIT, and move the TV to the adjacent wall and face the chairs to the fireplace/TV ... if you are looking for fun color, I'd start with painting the interior (back wall) of the shelf a color you like. The possibly move on the the ceiling and wall color. Do you consider the fireplace the focal point in the room?

I agree with Lyn, the color it is now suits the furniture, and the room. I wouldn't paint anything except the backs of the shelves, either. I don't think any other color is going to look right with your fireplace. You already have a color that tones down the red brick in the fireplace surround, and I would stay with it, or a similar color.

Agree the current mantel color looks good and with moving the TV. Also agree with Lyn regarding some editing.

I love a colorful mantle and built ins. You could even paint the wall above so that whole area becomes a feature.

Suggest focussing on the overall effect you want in the room and if you want impact, aim for a mid to deep shade (maybe a blue/green/grey to help coordinate with the colors mentioned) . What’s your rug like and are you willing to change? Replacing the fireplace surround will also create a nice impact. Think big picture then decide on paint/how to pull the room together.

Stick to white if room is small/want an airy feel/don’t want to make a lot of changes, but still consider updating the brick (maybe paint).

Accessorizing is also key, less is more and if interested, replace sconces with downward lighting.

Perhaps just a striking wall color would be more impactful in room vs changing that section, but consider updates to pull it all together.
