living room layout

We are looking to furnish our bare living room and having trouble coming up with what furniture to purchase given the space (scale drawing below and photo below). There are two doorways (no doors) in the space that make centering furniture to face the fireplace/tv difficult. Leaning towards maybe a sofa along the wall between the two door ways and maybe two chairs under the windows on the wall to the right of the mantle. Any suggestions for optimizing this layout are welcome!

Beautiful room with all the big windows. How many people do you need to seat to watch tv?

BTW, It would be good to have the stains sanded out (or the stained wood replaced by feathering in) by a pro before moving furniture into the room.

my first purchase would be a large area rug, to ground the space.

    Centered on the fireplace.

a sofa facing the fireplace, not hugging the wall. a console table behind the sofa.

comfortable side chairs or even two matching sofas facing each other on either side of the fireplace. side chairs to compliment the sofa(s) upholstered or leather, not all matching.

large coffee table After you have completed a cozy conversation area with the focal point/fireplace, build out the room with a games table and a couple chairs at the window.

how about dining at this end? Dining table, hutch, sideboard? What do you NEED?

A sectional seems to make sense and leave a couple feet behind it to walk.

How many people use the room daily and how many guests do you want to accommodate?

Thanks for the responses! Sorry for the delay. We are still figuring out the room arrangement. Right now, just my fiancee and I are in the space daily but we hope to have 1-2 kids. When we host, it’s usually about 6-8 people. It’s the only living space in the house where we watch tv so I’d like the space to be conducive to comfortably watching tv at night and also to have conversations when we’re hosting. Any additional ideas?

Any thoughts on the ideas proposed?

I really like the idea of the couch facing the tv with some space behind it to walk, but unfortunately when we attempted to simulate that set up, it was uncomfortable to watch tv because we were quite close and had to look up

Do you have current photos that shows the arrangement of your furniture and the tv? All four walls would be good.

Unfortunately we are not in the house and won’t be for several months due to a fire, but for the short time we did live there, we had a curved sectional we inherited several years ago against the wall that’s 111” but hadn’t yet figure out to do with the rest of the space and had already been planning to get new furniture.

Sorry about the fire. There's no need to rush into ordering new furniture while doing clean up and dealing with insurance companies. It is good to do some shopping around to see what you get for your money. You can start at a big place like Macy's and go up or down from there, depending on your current budget.

Thank you! Luckily everyone is okay and that's the important thing. We're now considering a couch with a chaise and 2 chairs as pictured here. Trying to make the most of a tricky space. Any other ideas?

Hello Jillian, is the reconstruction completed?

Not yet, they have to finish electrical and put drywall up but we are hoping to be in in a month

Because you are still in the electrical phase, would you consider relocating the TV? Here is a picture of a suggestion for your consideration.

    • One sectional with chaise
    • Three swivel chairs that can be turned for conversation or easily moved for TV viewing.
    • One small loveseat.
    • One floor lamp in the corner
    • Two small round side tables on either side of the loveseat
    • Two oval coffee tables.
    • one large screen TV
    • One TV console.
    • One small game table between the two swivel chairs.
    • The area where the two swivel chairs are can be turned into a play/storage area for your future children.

Hope this suggestion works for you and helps. Best wishes to you and yours in your continued reconstruction.
