My LR Needs New Paint Color

Hello! Struggling with paint colors for the LR. Not sure what direction to go to pull it all together. Currently it feels very heavy and I might be done with the accent wall. Would like to lighten it up and have the walls be a backdrop. Something that sets off the mahogony china cabinet and picture over sofa.

Ranch home - LR connects to DR (neutral cream color as shown in picture) and to the left is the hallway leading to the bedrooms so it all needs to flow. This room doesn't get a lot of use, but it is the room you walk into when you enter the house so it's the first thing you see.

Residence located in Northeast. LR faces SOUTH with the one bay window pictured. At this time of year and for the next few months the light is pretty golden. The rug has a green-blue backgound.

Benjamin Moore is preferred. Furniture pieces stay so please no comments on that. Curtains will be simple and neutral just to frame the window - privacy not needed.

THANK YOU in advance for your suggestions!!

Match the LR and hallway to the DR. And definitely no accent wall.

Pretty room and furniture. For whole-room paint, try the blue of the pillows or one shade lighter on a foamcore board.

Accenting the china cabinet: You could add a $20 uplight on the floor in the corner next to the china cabinet or put the china cabinet light on a timer so you see it every morning. If the china cabinet is fitted with standard incandescent light sockets, you can swap out older incandescent bulbs for LED bulbs that are much cheaper to run for a few hours a day.

That's a lovely sitting area. I can see exactly how the colors were selected the last time.

I think the pinky beige could certainly use a lift but still be a backdrop for the sofa.

That breakfront really gobbles up all the light in the room. You could paint the wall behind it but it's won't be as effective and the soft blue green color that seems perfectly matched.

Are there lights inside the cabinet. That could help. Or mirrors inside the back wall of the hutch could help.

I'd select the soft blue/green drapery panels for the windows.

SW Topsail, SW Mountain Air, SW Dew Drop, BM Glacier Lake would all be lovely options to highlight your lovely rug and brighten the room. I'd paint the ceiling the same color as walls.

Thanks to those of you who commeted so quickly! To answer the question about lighting in the breakfront - yes, it has lights and I should have turned them on for the photos. It does not have mirrors on the back walls. The current color behind the sofa is BM Oat Straw AF-340 and the blue wall is Dartmouth Green 691, also BM. BeverlyFLA - are you suggesting I keep the blue and just update the other wall color?

Celery - that looks amazing! Thank you for colorizing my photo! It seems that most of you are leaning toward a blue-green / green-blue. I'll check it out!

Beverly nailed it. The one color is just too ”pinky”. It dates your beautiful room.

I cannot tell from your pictures what colour paint is your dining room (looks like an off-white), I would paint the same colour or go for a warm white. Either one will give your room a fresh look. Then install curtains on your window in a same tone colour as in your rug, perhaps a slightly darker shade, and install natural fibre/bamboo shades on the window as well.

Yes, but now seeing what has been posted, I guess selecting a light blue/green is an option also

I like the paler wall colorsin your pretty room.

I also think with the formality of the furniture, a frame would be nice on the artwork over the couch.

I love this color cut 25 -50 % for anice neutral thta enhances red toned woods It is a BM color

I wouldnever do wood blinds in that space but some nice full linen drapes would be lovely . Please do not cover the DR table for anything except setting fo dinner .I think in yiur space I would cut the color50% just a hint it will refresh the sapce and work with what you have

Lovely room - and really like the color suggestions so far -

just a note that an easy way to lighten up the china hutch is to cut inexpensive foam board to size and cover it in wallpaper then just secure on the back wall of the piece - easy to change and is not a permanent change to the piece

I had to see the suggestion by someone of the same blue for the ceiling so here is my attempt using Celery's rendering and it would be stunning in real life.

WOW! Thanks, tracefloyd - that does look beautiful. The uniformity of color in the room may be the way to go, but I am torn about losing the blue wall - it ties everything together so nicely. The flip side is that seeing the room in one color shows how the blue breaks up the space. Decisons, decisions! Appreciate all the helpful comments and suggestions!!!!! My next step is some Samplize sheets.

I think I'm going to be the odd man out but I really like the current blue-green wall color behind the hutch/cabinet as well as the warmer tone you chose for the window wall. What if you painted the wall behind the sofa the same blue-green as is currently on the adjacent wall? It would be a lovely background color for your sofa and art work. Maybe someone could do a mock-up for you. It might be 'too much' of that accent color but it could be the perfect solution.

I like the blue color paint or gold lighter blue but I think what's making the room feel heavy to you is that dark china cabinet do you have a dining room you can go into or empty kitchen wall?

I wonder if the accent wall behind the china cabinet is the issue. The china cabinet is the focal point and so is the accent wall-- so both together is a double whammy. I think the word is imposing rather than heavy.

In Celery's rendering with no accent wall, that wall recedes nicely and the china cabinet feels more floaty.

Have you considered moving the dining furniture into the living room?

Such a pretty room, and I love your rug!

While I think using a blue-green paint the rug is a safe and expected choice, you might consider something else. I think a grasscloth wallpaper would add a beautiful and sophisticated look to the space. Grasscloth adds a lot of texture and updates a room.

Phillip Jeffries makes lots of gorgeous grasscloths in lots of colors and textures.

Here are some that may work with your rug:

You might even use a contrasting color. This terracotta picks up the reds in your rug and could be fabulous!

    Or a muted pink:

Here is a neutral with a great texture:

    Or this two-tone:
