island lighting

I have a 10 ft island and will have to do pendant lights because I can’t find an island light long enough to look good proportionate to the island. I know I need a 12 in on the end of the island but how much spacing should be between the lights if I have 3 pendants? I haven’t chosen a specific light yet but the one I’m looking at is 14” wide. I’d appreciate a general rule of thumb if possible in case I choose a different size. I just don’t want it to look crowded. Thank you!

It’s not clear how far from each end of the island you want the end pendants to be, so you decide that.

The middle pendant goes in the center of the 120” island length.

You can figure out the spacing between pendants from there, if it even matters. Draw a diagram if needed.

When I decided on mine I mocked it up on the floor. I used painters tape and cut out parchment paper rounds the size of my lights. I then drew up a diagram with all measurements and gave it to my builder.

That’s a great idea! I’m just concerned about it looking either too crowded or like I should have done more if they are smaller.

If you want to pendants, that's great! But my island is longer than 10' (about 130") and I have a single linear light. (It's this one, 61.25" x 30" and I love it.) I'm not discouraging you from using pendants, especially if you find some you love, just saying that you don't have to rule out linear chandeliers if you find one you like. (I did a search on Build.com for linear chandeliers, 55"-80" wide, and found many.)

This Modern Forms PD-58784-DW Drift 84" Wide Linear Chandelier is $1350. It's a lot but I don't know your budget.

There are loads of linear suspension lights of varying lengths on Amazon. This 8FT Linkable LED Linear Light is $130 and here's a 71" Wood Linear Pendant Light for $229.
