Cement patio staining

Looking to stain my cement patio in a grey color. I do not want to paint it. Unfortunately the cement was not laid flat and water pools there and I have mold. It is also ugly and I cannot afford to tile it. Any advice is appreciated!

Temporarily. Until he stain discolors and most likely comes off and the concrete ends up looking worse yet.

Water pooling and mildew will still happen even if stained.

Yes, I would stain regardless of the pooling. First power wash and dry it out.

I would do a few colors to create an interesting finish, lots of options.

Not just gray.

Use a regular garden sprayer. Spray in a random pattern. Do NOT use a sweeping motion back and forth or you will see stripes when it dries.

There will be contrast where the stain is a little thicker than others so more than one coat to even it out somewhat. Not too dark or the concrete can get hot.

Stain will not peel off like paint...not sure why that comment. Brown wet leaves make a stain from the tannins, we've all seen that for example, same idea. It's a dye.

Speaking from experience and ours has lasted years with little sign of wear or fading.

No personal experience, however, , my hardscape contractor said it can be done with good results.

If it was a poor concrete job, staining it may make it look even worse.

I have a concrete patio here in Florida that always has issues with mildew and water. I selected a concrete outdoor paint from Lowes that I applied 8 years ago that matches the color of the concrete and once applied evened out the appearance of the patio surface. It has performed well. I pressure wash it once or twice a year.

I did a bit of research and Epoxy coating is good too.

It's hard enough to get epoxy to adhere to an existing, enclosed garage floor and not have issues with it peeling off over time. I would never apply epoxy to an exposed outdoor patio slab and expect to not have problems.

Good to know. I should have done more research. Also good tip on the porch paint.
