Paint for previously painted pressure treated wood deck

I am really struggling with what to do for a paint.

I had a someone scheduled to finish our deck. The product that he proposed to use is called Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck Solid Deck Stain. It is a stain, not a paint.

The deck was previously painted about 8 years ago with a Behr primer & paint all in one product. While he scraped off the loose paint and lightly sanded the deck, over 50% of the old paint remains. Sherwin-Williams tells me that their stain will not sink into the wood where paint exists to get adherence. They also told me that they do not recommend a primer to be used with their SuperDeck Solid Deck Stain and that they do not have a product for our application.

The contractor does not want to remove all the existing paint. He tells me that using a primer and then 2 coats of Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck Solid Deck Stain will be fine.

Can you suggest a pant that is designed to go on top of the existing paint?

The porch and floor paint is a great product. I used it on interior floors in my Maine house- some new wood, some old wood with older oil based polyurethane , some latex paint, some oil paint. Bonded perfectly to all. So I think it’s a good option. But I think I’d rather find a handyman to sand the heck out of the wood and use the super deck stain.

I would keep sanding and then use the superdeck. No primer.

How much of the paint do I need to get off before applying the SuperDeck?

Anything that is loose or not in good shape HAS to come off. Keep in mind that proper prep is 75% of a good lasting finish. You have Behr (yuck) on there now so were it me I would want it 100% off (98% off may do). In other words a lot more than you have removed so far.

millworkman, thank you and we agree. Unfortunately, I can't find someone to sand the deck down to the wood and I do not have the ability. I just called Sherwin-Williams again and they are recommending their Porch & Floor Enamel. I understand that this is a paint and not a stain. They said not to prime and I apply this directly to the painted surface of a clean and sanded deck. Would you agree?

What's the difference here, still needs to be sanded? Again, the best paint or stain in the world applied on an ill prepared surface is still coming off in short order. You're looking to go over a kludge in a primer & paint in one made by a kludge of a company (Behr). If you do not remove it dam near completely the new paint will not stick well in my opinion.

Hallett & Co., I will try to find someone to get off more of the paint. In case I go with the Porch & Floor Enamel, did you use a primer first? If so, which primer?

No. No primer! It says that right on the container. (I’m not yelling at you, just emphasizing)
