Paint or Stain Moucharabieh Headboard

last modified: 18 days ago

I'm going to attach this moucharabieh screen higher to the wall behind the bed (it's just leaning on the wall now). It'll reach just below the reading light wall sconces on either side of the bed, so it'll have more of a "presence". Plus, I have 2 of these goldish brown wicker palm trees to hang above the headboard. I'm thinking the orangey cedar color of the moucharabieh may look out of place, and wondering if I should either paint it to exactly match the dressers, or stain it a similar "merlot" color, so that it doesn't exactly match the dressers color, but echoes it. It might be a more cohesive look for the room?

What do you all think? (scroll down to see the room itself)

Wall color C2 Cheetah

Dressers/nightstands color C2 Merlot

    are the sconces hardwired?

Have you tried the bed on the opposite wall?

I think the headboard color looks great as is. I wouldn’t mess with it.

I would however, remove the palm tree. Not doing it for me tbh…

Very happy with the bed on the wall that it's on. And, the palm trees, too lol. Now, back to the headboard color. Okay, one vote for leaving it natural. Looking forward to more votes.

    I would not paint it

Btw, the sofa isn't brown. It's a darker version of the wall color + black + soft white. The fabric is even called "Cheetah", same as the wall color. I'm not trying to be "authentic Moroccan". I'm more eclectic.

Even if you're going for a Bohemian style, the furnishings have to be more carefully curated to be successful.

My sofa is successful for me, because I can afford it, and because it makes me feel good, and because I like the colors. Do you think I should paint/stain the headboard, Beverly or leave it natural? Referring to my original question.

I think all your colors go together well, including the headboard. The sofa is funky and fun and the colors go with the room, more or less. I would not stain the headboard, I'd leave it as is. It looks to me like a good match with your bedspread. I'm not sure once you raise the screen, you'll still want the palms. I might put them on another wall.

I’d leave the headboard unpainted. But please take another look at how Beverly arranged the artwork. I think it’s a simple update that will better balance the room. The sofa is fabulous!

I would keep the headboard just as it is so no paint or stain because it stands nicely on its own. But perhaps consider painting the closet doors the same as the wall color to drench the room more with the background color you're going for. Looks like a cozy and fun space to enjoy!

Another vote for leaving the headboard natural - brings some nice warmth to the room

Hate to say it but the only thing I like on the bed wall photo is the two lanterns. The night stands are a bit too tall. Would suggest a much taller headboard - perhaps a padded one. The palm tree does nothing for me at all.

I would say leave the headboard the color it is, group you wall decor items closer together instead of having them scattered all over. Otherwise like your eclectic look.

Don’t paint the headboard - too matchy matchy with the quilt. It’s got a lot of texture and interest, as is. I also like Beverly’s idea of the mirrors over the headboard - completed the look and is balanced. You might consider that since you’re still working on that wall! 😉

Here's some more views of the space. I used to have the largest painting directly facing the center of the bed, and I didn't like looking at it from that vantage point (the scale or something felt too dramatic when I'm trying to relax). Hence, I really don't like that "tryptich" idea of smooching the 3 paintings together above the sofa, creating an even more massive color block in that one spot.

I positioned the small mirrors to capture nice views. I'd lose that if I reversed them. I kind of like the 3 small mirrors over the headboard idea, but I'm also into feng shui, and I'm not crazy about mirrors over a bed.

I like how my bed is tucked away behind the closet: you don't see it from the hallway or kitchen. Instead, you see that dramatic Liberace-esque sofa + the over the top art (I enjoy that, but to each their own).

The trim and door color helps tie the bedroom thematically with the adjoining master bath. In the rest of my house, the doors and closets are painted the wall color. I like to do that in general, but it does present hallway transition issues, and for this room, I felt the warm white trim works better.

Regarding the dressers, I don't love their style, but I got them cheap years ago and painted them. Size wise, I think they are perfect because they maximize available space without blocking the windows, and provide storage (I have no other dressers in the room). Maybe one day I'll find used dressers I like more. I like the over the top metal-bone-wood ones from Morocco, but they're way too expensive.

I wonder if leaving the two smaller paintings over the sofa where they are, and putting one small mirror centered over them + 2 palm trees on either side might work. I'll play around with it once the headboard is hung higher, if the palm trees then feel "too much" over the raised headboard.

Oh, and I know that the moroccan window film looks chintzy. I might at some point replace them with laser cut wood panels stained to match the blinds. I need "semi privacy" during the daytime.

The consensus seems to be to keep the moucharabieh headboard "as is". I had thought that the color looked "slightly off", and that staining/painting it closer to the color of the dressers would be a nicer contrast with the wall color and also tie in with the other elements (dark cherry wood on the sofa, Merlot paint color on dressers, maroon and burgundy tones in the art and bedspread). But, you'all think I should keep it this more "ecletic" original color, and I can see the merit in that, too. The cedar color does warm the space, vs changing it to a Merlot stain would be darker/moodier.

You have a super vibrant( even opulent) space!
Leave the headboard natural, and do raise it to at least the level of the window cross pieces or slightly higher as you intend.
Your nightstands are a tad too tall. Can you adjust the legs so they level out at or below the window sills?
Once the key furnishings are adjusted to maximize eye pleasing proportions you can go full out with secondary decor.I envision the occupants swanning about in flowing silky and diaphanous garments...no flannelette pjs allowed.

    Current height looks jarring.

Please do not do anything to the headboard except mount it on the wall.

This was a pillow cover offered on ETSY. Google search the image and see if it's still being offered.
