I think you want to illuminate that wall of cabinets.

Can you do can lighting. I feel like a fixture, no matter what, will feel misplaced.

In that area there isn’t another light source. In the dining area a chandelier that will be changed out.

If it's really in the wrong place and not doing what you need it to do, move the junction box. Rethink the whole thing. A fixture that hangs down like the one that's there doesn't look right. It looks like you just remodeled your kitchen. A lighting plan is part of a kitchen remodel. You may be tired of spending money at this point, but you're not done yet. However, you could let this sit for 6-12 months until you're ready to spend more. Sometimes the last $1,000 feels like too much.

is hard to help without knowing the rest of the room but if this is the only light and it’s not centered in the room - i’d have an electrician come out and remove it and add either a centered light or better yet several can lights (dep on kitchen size and budget)

I think we need to know what the rest of the lighting is in the kitchen this is only one spot.. The easy and cheaper answer is a nice LED track light no need for an electrician and great lighting but we really need to see the whole kitchen.

It'll help if you have an attic or some kind of access above the ceiling. Then you can use the switch for that light to control a number of inexpensive cans (6") with led bulbs that screw in like an old incandescent bulb. Or you can put in 4" cans with integrated Leds. It'sleds.It's possible to get a good upgrade out of this.
