Adding Wall Tile to Accent Wall

last modified: 27 days ago

Hello Houzz!

Since redoing my open floorplan great room (I knocked down the wall between the kitchen and great room), I have wanted to add stone to the wall behind my tv. Now that I am closer to actually doing it, I wonder if I should accent the area around my tv or the whole wall. This wall runs down the center of my house. Behind the wall are the bedrooms/bathrooms. In front of the wall is the open great room, kitchen, and dining room. I am attaching the original houseplan, but remember the wall around the kitchen is gone. I am also attaching the best photo I could find of the wall but it is still missing about 10 ft to the left. I am also attaching a photo of the open kitchen so you can see what is on the other side. Any thoughts are appreciated.

adding stone on the wall behind the TV...

do you have an inspiration photo?

    I would say No.

Rearranging the furniture and/or adding a tall/large piece of furniture would add more interest to the space.

My opinion is ”no” to a stone wall.

Give the TV wall more weight/presence with larger scale items such as a longer console, larger mounted TV, larger wall decorations, etc.

Right now the wall has a lot of smaller scale items (including the desk) that seem dwarfed by the wall and couch widths. A taller table lamp or floor lamp next to the couch may help too.

I’m no contractor but don’t you have to add extra support behind the walls if your planning on installing stone on them?

I would also say no to stone. It will be awkward to figure out how to end it and will be out of context on that wall.

    Here are some alternative Ideas:

This shows painted brick, but you could use a textured paintable wallpaper.

    No to stone, sorry.

The other problem is no rug, disparate furnishings/lighting, the side tables....and find another place for computer with a laptop and sit at the dining table!

Can you add pictures all angles and include the dining please?

Explain what you hope to achieve by adding stone so we can help you accomplish that goal in some other way. Do not add stone here. It just doesn't make sense.

IMO the space is already small so ading anything on the walls will make it smaller bot actually and visually. Take 1/2 those pillows off the sofa , take the stools away and move that sofa back a foot. Get some proper lighting in that LR and real trees or none . The drapes color in no way works with the floors . The drawing and the pictures do not seem to be the same space I see no angled sink area in the pics so do a proper to scale drawing of the space as it is now .

Patricia, this a a popular plan in FL. Obviously the floor plan is the original circa 2000, as build plan, and the OP's photos show that the whole kitchen area has been remodeled. A friend is actually working on a very similar remodel right now!

Agree with others, no stone or tile on the TV wall. It really isn't an accent wall and doesn't need any faux materials stuck on.

I would not do tile wall. This wall already looks busy.

Thank you all for the input on the Stone accent on the wall. I wondered if you would feel the same about other types of wall tiles, like a textured stick on or even a wood look. I see from the additional comments that the recommendation would be more for furniture rather than putting anything on the wall ither than paint. The photo below was my original inspiration. I did get design help and ended up with what is there now.

The TV in the OP pic is 55". I have since mounted a 65" tv on the wall so the proportions look a bit better. Also, the desk is not there anymore. My original question was about the wall so I just went back to get photos I could find that would show as much of it as I could. I also posted the old floorplan so you could see that the wall is very large. The large size is why I thought that a little accent would break it down a bit and define the space.

@BeverlyFLADeziner I do like the coffee table concept you have pictured there.

@Olychick the first two photos you have are very much in line with my original intention. I love them! I really need the storage so while I like the floating look, I would choose the extended entertainment/cabinet looks.

@JAN MOYER I do have a rug now (even though it is not in that older photo)!

@Kendrah I wanted to define the space with the accent on the wall. I didn't want to get the old style large entertainment center. So my thought was the stone, something light weight. I recently found the stick on wall paneling and it renewed my interest.

Thank you all for the advice. I think I can finally put away the idea of putting anything on the wall. I will look more into the furniture with or without wall shelves.

You all were great! Thank you!

This is more current photo. one is 1x and one is .5x zoom so you can see more.

Not my favorite shelving unit but it works for now. Also, while I liked the color of the old couch, it was not comfortable. I liked this couch the best even though the color is not what I would prefer. It is usually covered to protect it from my pets anyway.

No applied stone, why would there be a stone wall when you house is not an antique?

Consider new draperies, match the wall paint (which could be a warmer white); hang rods at the same height, with new and more substantial rods. Go with new, blue (and fewer) throw pillows for the sofa.

a feature of mural or paper, but stone or tile is too much with your kitchen tile.

Have you considered placing the sofa across the room and adding another sofa facing it or larger swivel chairs to fill out the conversation area? that way you can include guests seated at the island.

You have plenty of seating for dining, but not a lot of casual seating around the TV.

@Lyn Nielson I did consider the sofas facing each other but it doesn't work well with my lifestyle. The thought of watching tv always looking to the side sounded painful for my neck. It would be nice to be able to include the people sitting at the island that way but not a practical option for me.

I don't think the wall needs to be accented. You have beautiful high ceilings and it would only draw the eye down.

You still are not showing the entire wall but I would remove the left tree, center your display shelf in the space to the left of the TV with the two paintings above it.

Hang the plates somewhere to the right of the TV vertically. Then use just one of the trees to go with it since the plates are green.

Sometimes simple works. .Our TV wall has just one painting and a plant.

Thanks for the like, I was just editing my post to say no paint either with those high ceilings in case you missed it. Even the mural is just too much. I would at least try rearranging what is on the wall first.

The room feels open and I'm afraid a treatment on that wall will make it feel closed in. The door in the wall and the open end on the other side are not ideal for any accent wall.

Our sofa is perpendicular but I usually lay down in it to watch TV if I am not in one of the chairs.

Thank you so much @tracefloyd for the great input and ideas! i never thought about putting the two paintings together but that does sound good.

It looks like the TV could be moved to the left and the sofa pushed back a foot or two, even if it means walking in front of the TV or around the island.
