I don't know anything about whitewashing bricks but ask the builder is a pretty week expert to rely on before possibly ruining the exterior of your home. I would get advice from somewhere that sells the whitewash and buy a pre-prepared product. There are reliable videos on many topics available on the internet. This Old House, Home Time, Bob Vila and others. Many of the ASK sites are simply advertising sites with unprofessional advice.

Thanks for the replies. For what it's worth, I got into this idea because 2 friends up the street used that recipe on their own house which is beautiful and gets a lot of compliments. They've both worked on houses awhile and did their research. For anyone reading this - corn syrup worked fine as a substitute for molasses and making the recipe from scratch was pretty fun. The exterior of the house is not quite done, but it's looking awesome. I will try to upload images when it's done.

Ah, finally a good use for high fructose corn syrup! -- better the bricks than my tummy. Keep the molasses for oatmeal cookies! Looking forward to the pictures from the brave and daring...

I agree this would be interesting to see how it stood up to the elements.

Just did the math on the recipe - 50 pounds of lime and 12 pounds of salt to one little quart of molasses. With that kind of ratio you could use good ole blackstrap molasses instead light Karo syrup without much color change. And with only 1.5 Gallons of water i doubt you need the molasses to make stick to the bricks.
But maybe our modern paints have more un needed additives and more toxic one.
