Do thin frame aluminum doors instead. Skinny shaker are a very modern look, and metal doors are perfect with that.

Lyn, the ones in your photo are average width. I wouldn't consider those skinny shaker.

These are headed into the skinny category and look a bit thicker due to the rounded bead detail.

I assume this is for structural reasons. Skinny shaker doors don't have much frame for either strength or to retain panels. A glass panel is heavier than a wood panel, and will get more handling as heavy-handed people clean the glass. Also some people don't like visible hinges. Cabinetmaker doesn't want to deal with customer complaining "my housekeeper pushed the glass out of the door and I faint every time I see the ugly hinge through the glass".

The glass is too heavy for such a minimal frame. This is how they recommend doing glass doors. I'd consider the aluminum frame door instead.

No, you cannot do a wood veneer on top of metal. It won't bond long term. Skinny shaker wood cabinets CAN be done as glass doors, but you will NOT like what it looks like. The hinges are big and bulky, visible through the glass, and there's multiples of them. Which is why your cabinet maker is telling you that he "can't" do it. He doesn't want to hear one more complaint about someone getting exactly what they ordered, and then having buyers remorse. Most of the pics online photoshop that out, BTW. But you can't live your life with a permanent Photoshop filter.

The glass isn't heavier than frameless heavier glass shower doors. The hinges clamp the glass. Link.

That could be one step. Next a matching skinny shaker frame that can drop onto the glass/hinge assembly with vhb tape or glue.

I have slim Shaker (not very skinny, but the slimmest from my chosen cabinet maker) with glass doors in the uppers. The frame around the glass is wider than the stiles on the other doors, but to be honest it has never bothered me and I don't think anyone else has noticed. This might not be what you want, but this was my experience.

Also a reminder to plan for lighting in your glass uppers. However with the lights on and from certain angles, you can see the hinges in the glass uppers.
