Your solution should be to add items that will visually raise the ceiling in the room.

I have added drapery panels, art, candlesticks, & a taller plant. There's no place for those little frames you mounted on the wall. Relocate them.

You need art on the walls and the windows are jut fine the way they are and add some lighting A nice arc lamp to light the coffee table and placed in the corner behind the sectional would be a good start.

I'm suggesting natural fibre roman shades, a tall natural plant, a large canvas on the wall above the sectional, an arch lamp in the corner behind the sectional, coordinated accent pillows in shades of blue/beige/gray/cream.

I really like what Beverly shows, but I might even widen the drapes farther out onto the wall. I wouldn't add any shades because that will tend to visually bring the ceiling down and will block some view and light.

I see you have baseboard heat. Is it electric? If so, drapery panels may be a fire hazzard.

-Hang the curtains as high to the ceiling and also extend outside the windows as more as possible, like half of the current wall, each side. so that the clean pleated curtains can act as the focal point and also blends the whole space together. :)

Shades add nothing to the ambience of a room. Go with panels and in your case put the rod up against the ceiling and stack them off the windows entirely so as much light can get through as possible. I would choose a fabric with color and a fun pattern.
