Roll out vs Pull Out Question- experts plz help

Question for Cabinet Designers, Interior designers and kitchen specialists. Can you please let me know the difference (if there is one) between a pull out and a roll out? We received our cabinets for our island and we have 2 that are labeled pull out base cabinets with organizers. However, Base Cabinet #1 is a cabinet with a door that you open and then you grab the bottom of a tray and roll it out and then push it back in and close door when done, Cabinet #2, is a pull out where the organizer comes out with the door. I thought both were going to be like cabinet #2 because they were both labeled pull out on paperwork. We discussed the cup hardware being on both sides of the island to create symmetry during the design process . The cabinet company says there is no difference between a pull out and roll out and the words are interchangeable. Please let me know your expert opinon on pull out vs roll out?

The Tray Pull out is a cabinet door that opens and then you roll out the tray organizer by hand then close the door. The Trash Pull out has the recycling and trash organizer attached to the front of the cabinet door, so you don't have to open and then pull something out. You just open and close. I thought both would function as the trash organizer does

Why are you asking here? Is there a problem? It does not matter what things are called, what matters is you get what you want.

You thought you were getting this?

I have both “roll out” and “pull out”, to use your definitions.

I find they are both easy to use; the two steps of the roll-out (open door, pull out drawer) is barely slower, the effort of the pull-out (pull out entire loaded assembly) is slightly greater.

There’s times when roll-out is superior. If there are two drawers behind the cabinet door, obviously it is better to be able to pull out just the one you want. Since a half sheet pan is 13” x 18”, the lower drawer can hold them with the 18” side horizontal, and the upper drawer can hold another layer of half sheet pans or be used for smaller pans that otherwise get lost. I think that may work better than a single drawer holding pans with the 18” side vertical as PFF showed, since when the drawer is pulled quickly pans can shift or slide or topple over, and small pans get lost between large pans. Also, the cabinet door hinges can be adjusted to keep the door exactly aligned to the cabinet.

Conversely, there’s times when the pull-out is superior, and the trash/recycling application is a good example. However, if the door ever gets misaligned then it will be difficult to adjust it - depends how OCD one is, if this matters.

In your case, the tray pull out is quite wide. If it were a single drawer with pans placed vertically, I think it would be heavy and unwieldy.

Im not sure I ’d put a farmhouse sink in island… take away the extra inches for that big sink and prefer to reduce the 3 inches on each end .[6 inches for what?] id rather have a good stack of drawers at maybe 21 -24 in wide . A vertical tray cabinet can be installed near stove..or buy a vertical insert to simply screw into 9 in empty carcass....good storage/ simple/ and more handy near cooking area. Why the worry abt symmetry and so on ? … The working side of an island has an aisle then wall of cabinetry beyond.... that wall holds visual importance , but Task side of island below counter not so much ......think function mostly...... 30 or 33 regular sink base cab and get drawers on the left for better use of your inches. .

this island is about 8 feet long..if you still want the apron front sink, I'd eliminate the 3 inches on each end and note they have a useful stack of drawers at the far end.

Yes @PPF. I thought I was getting that

As my contractor explained, with a rollout you have two steps to get to your stored item. With a drawer only one. Also think space. In my very small bathroom, there wasn’t enough room to open the doors fully to be able to pull out the rollout. able to pull out the roll out

Does your left cabinet rollout have one or two drawers? If two, I think the rollout cabinet you received is a good choice. If it has one drawer, personally I would prefer a pullout but a rollout (with side rails to hold pans upright) would be ok. As pointed out by @John Liu, I find the pullouts do need re-alignment sometimes whereas the rollouts usually do not.

If you are not happy, talk to your kitchen designer and cabinet company. But any redo cost may be on you (depends on the specs used for the build/quote). The specs should have detailed what is behind each cabinet door otherwise how would the cabinet company know whether to include one or more drawers, or whether to use rollouts or fixed shelves? The specs affect the build and the quoted cabinet cost.

Go with the pull out tray organzier. I love my tray pull out.

The cabinet to the right of warming drawer is my tray pullout.

Just looking at your island layout, I think you are not maximizing your function (DW where it is there is really not optimally placed). If you would like some additional help with cabinet placement let us know and we can help you. I definitely agree not to have the 3" fillers on both ends, which is a waste.

Regarding your question, I would be very clear with the salesperson on what you want, because no, they are not interchangeable in function.

Regarding symmetry, it is unnecessary on an island as no one ever looks at this side of an island unless you are cooking there, and to get a "symmetric" view of it you basically have to back way up to see it. Doesn't matter. At all.

I , personally , do not use them interchangeably for this exact reason. But I do know a lot of people do. Did the designer show you a picture of what the tray divider would look like? So sorry there was a misunderstanding. I only know of pullouts for 12" wide cabinets not 18" .

I wonder if you could attach it to the door like posted above by Clyde? Do you have a picture of it?

I also agree that there really doesn't need to be that kind of symmetry on your bases.
