Have a problem. Does anyone has a solution?

So my garden is located under white and red oaks with small amount of hickory. Every June it seems leaves of the hostas accumulate dirty soot. Am hearing it is aphids sap that leave on the trees and it all happens after rain when it runs down.

Anyone has solutions because hostas look like crap after, this year is the worst. It is thankfully spotty and has worst and better looking spots. Am not sure if the pattern repeatable. Garden is large though. I am all ears for workable solutions. Plain water with soap does not work.

These were glowing 2 weeks ago. It goes up inside the leaf with only marginal help after washing with soap and water.

Lindalana, just saw this…..yikes…..maybe try emailing Chris Wilson with pictures and see if he has an answer. He responded to me very quickly when I emailed him.

Thank you! I am having difficulty imagining I can power wash my big trees. I did order ladybugs though.

Another thing to think does pruning trees higher, aka removing lower brunches helps?

I'll be honest -- I don't see the problem here. I looked at your photos and don't see it; certainly from farther away viewing it isn't a problem.

If you think your hostas look like crap, you must have really high standards. They are beautiful in the photos; many would envious.

I park under a Shumard Red Oak. Here, at least, they are huge trees and they do, indeed, have aphids. I have to wash my car regularly. If I had it to do over, I'd plant a Texas Red Oak. They are not as huge, and don't appear to have the problem.

Plus, they have a beautiful fall color.

I've got no solutions, but can commiserate. I have lots of oaks. That stuff's on my plants, my cars, anything that's out there. I do have to say though, your hostas look better than mine! I know that's not helpful to you at all, but I do think they look pretty good!

Up close, I can see what you’re talking about, but as pork chop said, they are so beautiful in spite of the problem. I hope ladybugs will do the trick.

What a pretty garden. Ladybugs would have been my suggestion. You’re already in top of that.

I wonder if treating once a year with tree & shrub feed & protect would prevent the aphids? They sell a generic version on Amazon that I have used on Crepe Myrtles for scale.

Can you spray your trees? I'd talk to your local extension agent about the insects and how best to treat them.

If you cannot spray, maybe a shade cloth or canopy of some sort erected over the hostas during the worst of the aphid “rain”? I was first thinking a bunch of umbrellas might be a fun solution , but not if you get much wind…. 🤪
