A closer look at the kitchen

I would swap out or spray paint some of that chrome decor black Or rub n buff a dark gold. also swap out your coffee table to a round wood tone or if that is not in the budget spray paint the legs black if the frame is chrome. Maybe swap out that lamp shade to a rattan one..you need more wood/natural elements to tie in your kitchen and for that organic look

swap out your light above the sink to something different like the pictures i attached. since you hve one light there you can get a track that has more than one pendant but gets wires into that one. keep your light above the dining room table as it goes with your modern organic.

I don't think the floor looks bad at all. The unfinished look of the wall cabinets is troubling - not even a simple trim on top or a light rail!

Then you turn around and everything is just gray and white. That may be what you love but I think some color is desperately needed. The rustic look of the base cabinets is nice for that organic feel, but then there is nothing "woody" or organic anywhere else. Maybe a nice wood and steel coffee table?

This is a tricky one but I think it will come down to accessories!

I you still have rods to extend your dining room chandelier I would use them to lower the chandelier to about 30"-32" inches above the table. I also suggest you get a more substantial light for above the island, that single glass pendant looks lost. Same height suggestion for the island as for dining table. As for your cabinets, I think everything looks fine with the floor tiles.

I would go with a longer gold and glass light fixture for over your island to tie in the gold from the wall sconces in your living room and the glass from the dining room fixture. Cover your grey throw pillows on your couch with white covers or white and thin black stripe covers

Just my two cents, the only thing that bothers me about the kitchen is those cabinets.

They looked like they were purchased at home depot and hung up. It's making your kitchen look cheap.

As suggested, bring some wood into your sitting area to connect it to the kitchen.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I agree about the cabinets. Unfortunately that’s how my builders installed them and I didn’t even have the option to upgrade. It is a project on the list to add to them so they connect to the ceiling.

As for the recommendations to lower the dining light and have a wood coffee table- I totally agree! I think that’s what was missing, more organic elements in the living room.

I’m not entirely convinced on adding an island light. I took the pendant off so now there’s nothing there. I think having another light would have too much going on, no? I wouldn’t want there to be too many competing elements in the kitchen, especially because I feel like there’s already a lot going on with the cabinets and the tile.

The big problem is that there is SO MUCH gray, and no contrast or color anywhere. You have to get out of the rut that "it's gray, so it must match", because that just isn't the case. And a little bit of something being good doesn't mean a whole lot of it is good.

You have gone way far down the muckup Road to Bland and need in person professional design help.

@minari The couch is picking up grey in the photo but in person it’s more of a taupey griege. The rug is also beige/ivory so I’m not sure what you mean by too much grey. My dining chairs are ivory. The only thing totally grey are the ottomans which can easily be moved.

I think the thing is that on our monitors, it looks gray - the walls the curtains, the couch the pillows. If there are tone differences, that isn't coming through.

I would keep a light over the island since the sink is there. You can purchase coordinating fixtures so the chandelier over the table can match the island.

For the other things, just change one or two things at a time and see how you feel. Sometimes it just takes a few items to make you feel better about your space.

For the cabinets, all you need is a fascia and crown to fill to the ceiling unless you want to take those down and install taller cabinets.

Try getting curtains with a pattern, not bold. And I think I would change the matts on the pictures to black or navy.

Someone mentioned you can bring colour into your living room as everything is gray. If you like a subdued colour scheme, here's one idea that still brings life into the room.

Just adding some trim to the top and bottom of the cabinets would be a fairly inexpensive way to upgrade the cabinets. Generally the trim on the bottom is hiding under counter lighting, and you could add that later. These pics show trim at bottom and possible cupboards at the top, although just adding trim to the top would greatly help.

You need a lot more warmth. Warm ivories, beiges, and straws. Natural wood. Real plants. Leather. Wicker. Real stone with warm colors. Grays and warm tones CAN work yogether. Just look at a rock outcrop with lichen. Those stony grays, with gray greens, and barky browns, all work together, and are serene and neutral, without being bland or overloaded with any one overdone color.

If I were you, the first thing I would do is paint the gray walls a warmish white. ALL the gray walls you have.

There are other non-gray non-taupe things I would do in these rooms, but that’s all I will say about that.

Check your lighting too.

And yes, the cabinets appear to be sub-par quality.

My walls are actually a white colour. I think it’s the photo lighting or something. I’ll attach a close up here. You can also see my couch is griege and my curtains are taupe.

Sorry Ronnie. It is just the way things show up on the monitors. I still see a grey couch, light gray walls and gray drapes on my monitor. Crazy!

Perhaps the taupey-gray drapes are casting the gray tone on everything in the room! Try plain white drapes and see if your room lightens up.

I guess I didn’t realize how everything had a grey tone to it! The curtains are also drawn so there’s not a lot of natural light as there usually is, so that’s darkening everything. But, I do agree with the feedback of adding white elements to brighten it up!! Thanks

Good idea to change the drapery to an off white. You living room is quite lovely.

We need to tie the kitchen wood into the living room. Perhaps some baskets with a similar color, It's all about transitioning one area to another. Also I see you like blue (dining area) perhaps some different shades of blue pillows for the sofa.

I see you have a little one, so perhaps you don't have much time to shop. Perhaps you have things around the house that could be moved.
