Exterior Cladding/Siding and Painting Brick. in

I am asking for a friend with permission. because they’re too overwhelmed to join here and post. They are gutting the inside of this house and also working in exterior same time. The front used to have a bay window out front which they removed. They are trying to modernize it but not over the top modern. They have decided on a light brown WoodPlank cladding as accent for front of house all around windows and then on the left of the front door, coming out to the siding only. They were interested in opinions on what they should do with brick (stain/paint?) and also what they should do with siding (color/kind) replace or something else. They will be replacing the garage doors with most likely black new doors and also the windows in the left will be replaced with black trim windows to match everything else.

Always best for the homeowner to ask and respond themselves.

I'm not a fan of black garage doors, they look like a black hole.

I hope they are removing the shutters, since they have gone with black windows, I guess they want a modern look. I personally would not paint or stain the brick.

The brown siding doesn't compliment the roof, but maybe they have plans to change that too... some day.

    I love black but, I also say no to black garage doors, because, they call a lot of attention to themselves, and look like a big black hole. I am not sure what they are doing in the front, but, that brown, does not go with another thing on the house. The brick is very nice, but, there is also some siding. The front where they changed windows, should be a lap siding to match other siding on the front of the house. and leave the brick alone, it looks nice. It appears they are doing to many things, both inside and outside, and are over whelmed and not giving any thought to many things, and they will end up with some huge mistakes. Best advice I can give them, is to stop. Go out to dinner. Have a nice evening. Start again tomorrow, and start slower, and think about what they want. Once they have thought it through, then finish up the exterior, before any winter starts to happen. The interior can be done regardless of time of year. They need to do some landscaping, that needs to happen when its fall season, and thats very soon. Just concentrate on getting one thing done, and do it well, rather than a lot of things, and end up sorry when they are done.;

The current siding color goes with the roof, but neither of those go with the brick. I can rarely endorse painting brick as it is a shame to change a no maintenance surface to one that requires maintenance. However, if the brick we're seeing is only on the front, then there isn't very much of it so it's lower stakes to paint it. Are the other sides of the house siding, no brick?

When choosing paint colors (or siding color) you have to consider the fixed elements. How old is the roof? If it's relatively new, then you have to consider it a fixed element, along with the brick unless they go with painting it. It's hard to visualize what you describe with the brown siding on the front. While that might go with the brick (depending on the shade of brown), I can't see it going with the roof. What made them go in that direction? Did they have some sort of idea of where they were going with this before they ordered brown siding?

I agree with cat_ky that the homeowners seem to have a project that's gotten away from them because it's so encompassing, so slowing down would be a good idea. However, I imagine they have the contractor(s) lined up and time is of the essence. If so, tell us about their intentions as far as the roof and whether there is more brick on a side of the house not in the picture so people can offer the best advice.

Painting brick IMO just devalues a home ans adds one more layer of continual upkeep. If modern is the pan keep the brick and do a nice charcoal color for the siding and maybe a nice natural wood for the front door and garage door instaed of the black

It doesn’t look like a brick home - just strips of brick for accent? Agree with @cat_ky and @kandrewspa they need to have a plan before the siding goes up

With warm brown siding and warm brick, I'd paint the rest a warm cream. They should get garage doors in the same warm brown as the siding.

Gray garage doors...bring roof color down to eye level.

    Rough sketch:

    Alternatives:

Here is a Charcoal garage door, not black.

    Same as the front door:

Same color as the wood siding:

Of course it is not a brick house but really the brick is the only thing bringing life to the facade BTW the shutters have to go when the new windows come
