Wainscoting - what kind and where?

I need some suggestions! I want to add wainscoting with hooks to my entryway (for jackets) and my kitchen (for drying herbs and other nick nacks). I am trying to decide between two things:

1. box molding vs. beadboard

2. height of molding in kitchen - same as entry area or higher (like 4-6 in below doorway top)? And how far around the kitchen should I carry this - one wall or all the way?

The third picture is taken from the door so you can see into the kitchen from the livingroom!

any ideas welcome!

That wainscotting is way too low to put hooks on to hang jackets and things. The sleeves will drag on to the floor. It also takes away from your room, and could become a messy eyesore. I would forget that idea. Do you have a utility room, you could put a wood board with hooks up higher to hang things on? That would be a much better option, and out of the main living areas.

There's PICTURE MOLDING or BOARD AND BATTEN MOLDING for wainscoting. Either selection is a big project because you have to know what your goal is before you cut the first piece of wood.

Picture Molding would be for a home that is decidely TRADITIONAL. It will require you mitre the corners.

Board and batten can be installed using straight cuts in most cases.

the home doesn’t currently have any trim or crown so I would skip it, just doesn’t seem to fit the style

Less is more. Don't over kill the wainscoting. Concentrate on the entry. It will give you the biggest bang for your buck.

Your dining table area needs some help. Start a new thread to get ideas. I weigh a 140 lbs, and 5'8", and I could not mange to sit at your table on the wall side. Float that table, girl.

if you plan on adding a board for hooks, I'd make it 60" off the floor or higher.

I'm with lalagirl. Wainscoting doesn't fit the style of your home. If you need a spot to hang jackets, just put up some hooks on the wall.

Neither of these makes sense for the style of your home. These treatments belong in homes where they are carried throughout the house, not just stuck on to one place as decor.

Use a row of wood pegs for the kitchen. And find a good solution for where to hang jackets. Can your living room handle an armoire? It sounds messy to have jackets on the entry wall, you'd have to hang them high enough, and you wouldn't want them hanging behind the door or the door won't open all the way.

Show us pics of your living room and we might be able to find a fix for you.
