Fence Location Help

So I’ve attached a design of my backyard. The way my backyard is, is that slopes downwards from the back of the house to the back end of my yard specifically more so in the middle to top right of the picture. In order to get one flat yard, I am doing a 3 ft retaining wall going from the center back of the yard to the center right of the yard. So like a L shape against the property lines.

My question is should I put my fence for the yard on top of the retaining wall or should I put the fence in front of the retaining wall. If I put the fence in front of the retaining wall I would basically see 3 out of 6 feet of the fence. My contractor said that would aesthetically look better than putting the fence on top of the wall.

What do you guys think?!

Depends what you need the fence for.

With dogs that used to be able to jump 6 ft fences easily and coyotes in the area, I would go for the option that gave the the tallest fence and still met any local codes you might have.

Did you have your lot surveyed? When we sold our previous house we found out the previous owners did not have a survey done before installing a fence which created an issue around settlement time (the next door neighbors coincidentally had a survey done around that time because they wanted to change the location of their driveway). Whatever you decide to do, make sure you're putting your retaining wall and fence inside your lot line. I will add that if you're not in an area with coyotes, but you have deer instead, we did find a six foot fence to deter deer. They could get over it, but for the most part they were too lazy and content to eat our neighbor's plants instead.

The third option is a 3 foot fence on top of the retaining wall. That would look good from the patio area you're creating.

I have a white picket fence on top of stone retaining wall and stone wall. It looks good. My retaining wall is all facing out, so keeping dirt from spilling away from my yard, not keeping it from spilling into my yard.
