Why a faux wood product? My front porch has a real tongue and groove stained wood ceiling and it’s as fresh as the day it was installed 7 years ago. Because it’s a ceiling, it’s completely protected. It never sees the sun and the elements don’t affect it at all.

Our porch also has pine tongue and groove with clear coat. Looks great and no issues with it whatsoever.

We live in Indiana, so with the significant weather variations, moisture, carpenter bees, etc. a faux protect would be better with no maintenance since the ceilings are cathedral and not easy to reach.

We lived in Iowa for 13 years with a tongue and groove cedar ceiling, clear coat and no problems whatsoever. The screened porch was open to the elements and had a cathedral ceiling. (13 feet)

The poly keeps the carpenter bees off. I’m in savannah Georgia where we have everything from hurricanes to snow.

@Nidnay - This is off topic, so please forgive me, but I am wondering how the beautiful wood counter on your island is holding up. Have you been happy with its durability and functionality? What type of wood is it and how was it sealed?

Design Dimensions…. The counter is holding up perfectly! I absolutely love it and would install it again in a heartbeat. It’s so much more comfortable eating at a wood surface rather than cold, hard marble (alhthough I do love the marble, and that also has held up fantastically, I just don’t enjoy eating on a stone surface). The wood is unfinished walnut, and I just oil it a couple of times a year with food grade mineral oil. Thats it. If a water ring or water spots happen, i just put a little oil on the spot and that erases them.

Also, didn’t I see in some of your photos that you have a sink in your island? We will have a prep sink and I expect that that is where we will prep vegetables and make salads, so there will be a fair amount of water splashing on the counter, which concerns me

The marble is honed Bianco Avion. As I mentioned above, I am completely satisfied with it and have had literally ZERO problems. I installed it with fear and trepidation due to all the warnings about marble, but for me, those fears were completely unfounded.

I do have a sink in the island, but it rarely gets used. It’s pretty though (hammered copper) :) Honestly though, if the sink got heavy, daily use, I believe it would be a problem. I have wood counters in the scullery (maple), and they have fared well also, but we are SUPER careful to wipe up around the sink - it definitely gets wet and you do not want water to penetrate under where the sink meets the wood as with an undermount sink. Or even with a drop-in sink, you do not want the water to get under the lip and then sit there where you can’t wipe it dry. Also, since walnut is a much darker wood, lots of splashing on it will show lots of water marks by making those areas lighter. Of course oiling it will remove them, but it will be a constant battle if you want your island to look as good as it did the day it was installed.

Your entire house is simply gorgeous. You did such a beautiful job with your design and finish selections.

Here is our island sink. There will be lots of splashing and dripping around disposal switch and sprayer if you have one. Also, where the arrow is located is an area of concern if water creeps under there. Honestly, maybe with wood that is actually finished and not simply oiled you would fare better. You should talk to a wood counter specialist.
