With your island and perimeter cabinets being different colors, I think you should keep the counters the same, to tie everything together. If you want a different counter material for the island, make the island cabinets the same.

That’s a great suggestion and I’ve thought about that but the countertops ijen and Roma are very bold , so was thinking to lift a lighter shade /color from them and use that for the perimeter. I do have a feeling that might look a little off hence reaching out to the experts here.

You already have a Dove white perimeter different from Walnut island island, so PLEASE, one top for both areas.

What is your flooring, what is the layout? What are the appliances? You are buying new cabinetry? Painting existing cabinetry?

Show the "plan" as that comes well before all else: )

You should provide more details and photos of the area if you're looking for expert advice. Other factors come into play that need to be considered, such as flooring, backsplash, finishes, lighting, etc.

Otherwise you are mixing four finishes in addition to your flooring, splash, appliances. It is too much.

I recently built a home with perimeter cabinets and island two different colors and I tried to pick different countertops. I realized, thankfully, that this was near impossible and ultimately decided to use the same counters throughout. So I thoroughly agree with the advice to use only one material for both surfaces.

The kitchen is a galley style kitchen with cabinets on opposite walls with the island in the middle. ( ignore the dining table , it’s going away) . The wall colors are Benjamin Moore simply white. Cabinets white dove and floor is white oak ) the cabinets are still getting installed.. distance between the fridge wall and island is 48 . Distance between the opposite wall and island is 55 inch. The wall opposite the fridge is going to have the microwave oven on one side and a 30 inch pantry on the other side of the cabinets ( the last pic)

I love the Ijen blue quartzite for everywhere! The other one is too crazy for more than an island like you say.

We did two different surfaces with our painted cabinet/wood island combo. Dark soapstone accentuated the wood finish and marble lightened up the perimeter. Glad we went with the two different surfaces. Plus, I love marble but could never commit to having that on our heavily used island. Best of both worlds!

@TL do you have any pictures you could share?

Interesting to note the galley layout. I'm a big fan of trying to eliminate the bowling alley effect in a galley. Your current plan is going to exacerbate the bowling alley effect. But, if you want to do walnut and focal point blue top on the island as a big splash going down the middle of your room, I suggest for the side cabinets you find a solid surface top that is close of a match as possible to your white cabinet color. That way the walls, cabinets, and counters on the edges all sort of blend into a field of white with your island as the focus. Consider a Corian that is close of a match as possible to the cabinets. It is a great, stain resistant, low maintaince surface.

(I'd have done the island and window wall cabinets and counter in the same color and the far wall cabinets and second countertops in a different color. I presume it is too late to change your cabinet colors.)

The bowling alley look is going to be broken by a small dining table on the other end . I have ample room for that . Will be putting a 70x40 dining table

You may want to reconsider wall color since it seems the cabinets are already done. If you can still change cabinet color you may want to either swap which white is used for cabinets or just do Simply White for everything.

Blue anything, tens to love a cooler white. Blue tends to make even soft white,,,,,,appear more yellow. For what it's worth : )

No idea the "blue" in your blue and considered quartzite.

I am not as opposed as others are on using two countertops and two cabinet finishes for island and perimeter if they all relate well.

I think the following examples are well done . . . but all have 2 island colors with 2 different countertops and I don't think they would be as nice if they had to pick one of the two countertops and not use both.

On the other hand some there are some that make me feel like they have too much going on . . .

Yeah my thoughts exactly. I did look up some amazing two tone cabinets and counter examples on houzz and Pinterest. Just need to see what would flow best for my kitchen.

I was looking to see what other counters others may have used with ljen blue and ran across this post - didn't find the perfect complent - but the OP who started the post ended up going with Ocean Blue Quartzite and I am in love - I like it better than the ljen blue or Roma Blue - so thought I would share.
