Yep, and with a sourwood too. A late frost, to which they are extremely susceptible, took it down. It resprouted from the base, I let it grow for a season or two and then took out all but the strongest sprout.

Sourwoods are good sprouters, even cut-down older trees. Let it go a couple yrs, then trim to one dominate stem if you wish. When I lived in southwest VA in a previously cut forest (guessing cut in the 1930s), there was a large one near the house that was obviously a sprout w/6 or so trunks.

I had an oak sprout several years ago. I called it my oak bush. It is now 15-20 ft tall with a perfect straight, but not large in circumference yet, trunk. Completely unexpected.

This isn't the fore-mentioned multiple-trunked sourwood in VA, but just a short distance away from that was this one -- a smaller, single-trunked one. This was taken w/one of the earliest digital cameras (poor quality).

I ordered 2 bare root Carya ovata (Shagbark Hickory) several years ago. Planted one in the ground and the other in a container. Neither grew more than an inch/year (this species has been difficult to grow in the PNW, but that's another story).

When I moved the container tree after sitting on the hard-packed clay for several months, it had rooted into the clay. I cut the single thick root, and several weeks later it started to grow from the root in the soil. I bought two trees and ended up with three. Then I moved house.

(If anyone wants to discuss Carya in the PNW, I would love to have that conversation!)

@Artiinnature, maybe you'd have better performance w/shellbark hickory, as my two are growing very fast, one doing so even in pretty deep shade. Leaves are the biggest of hickories.
