How high should tile be in a bathroom with high ceilings?

We have high ceilings in a bathroom and prefer not to tile up to and across the ceiling around a shower/tub combo. How far above the shower head would it be okay to stop the tile?

I have 11 ft ceilings in most of my bathrooms and I carried the shower wall tiles all the way to the ceiling and also tiled the ceiling over the shower. It fills the shower space with water-proof materials and is easier to keep clean. I have done all my bathrooms this way.

Aligning it with the top of the doors or top of trim around doors is done all the time. Best to carefully study all elevations on graph paper with your tile layouts to see what works best

I have also installed the shower (or tub/shower combo surround) wall tiles all the way to the ceiling in all bathrooms - even the two that have ceilings higher than 9' (my primary bathroom has 11'). I wish that I would have thought about doing the ceilings also.

Tile doesn't have to show up on every wall in the bathroom.

Tile should align with architectural elements.

You can have the tile extend 12" up from the tub, provided there is no overhead shower.

Stop at the same height as the shower doors if you prefer not to take the tile to the ceiling. A good exhaust vent on a humidity gauge- or time-based switch will keep mildewed paint down to a minimum.

Personally, I would tile to the ceiling but not on the ceiling.
