Door casing thoughts

last month

Hi! We’re installing new door casing (pictured here). While it’s the perfect width, it’s 1 1/4” thick. With the 8’ ceilings we have, do you think it looks too big for the space?

We’ll also be adding 5” baseboard and 3 1/2” crown molding.

Appreciate your thoughts!

No. The purpose of the thickness is so the baseboard and the shoe moulding can end cleanly on the side of the backband. It’s an elegant finished look

    What do you think?

What does the base and crown look like?

How will the trim be finished -- paint?

It does look too thick and crown molding in rooms with 8 foot ceilings shortens the height visually which isn't great IMO.

It will be painted cream/white to match the ceilings and baseboard

Adding a taller baseboard and crown to the door and trim will make the house appear like an overly decorated cake unless the architectural style of the house encourages the combination with existing details.

Right now I think the trim is too much for that lovely door design. That door trim belongs with a door like this one below.

Once you start down that path, ALL your wood trim should be heavily detailed.

Not going to lie. Don't love it. A peek into the bath, tells me you're trying to turn a simple house into something it is not? Show more of what you are doing.....? And where?

As @HALLETT & Co. stated, molding thickness has nothing to do with space; molding projection is intended for the base and shoe molding to die into it without protrusion.

I like the trim, and the baseboard should be nice, but, no, to crown moulding if you have 8 ft ceilings. Just leave the ceiling like it is. I have removed all the crown from this house, and it makes a big difference. I also removed it from the last house, and it made a huge difference there too.

Need to see the entire space to judge that.

Again, tough to tell about the crown and base combo without seeing the entire space. What profile base? The crown may be too much but that will be space dependent in my opinion.

A little bit chunky for the space, but it will look fine once it is painted in the white trim color.

I think if the outer trim piece had no added grooves to it (but was the same depth) that would eliminate extra lines of ‘visual busyness’. Your door is very elegant so the trim should be elevated to match. But I think the trim is a tad too fussy in its detailing. I think Bev said the same thing just phrased differently.
