Sectional or sofa for our living room

last month

Looking to replace our current sectional. It’s an Ekornes Stressless and while high quality it just doesn’t work for us.

If you want a sofa that reclines, there are sofas that are more streamlined and don't look like puffy Michelin Man furniture!

We have a Smart sofa from Bracci. It comes in different seat widths, different sofa lengths and also available in family/pet friendly leather/suede.

For more help you might want to include a wider shot of the room and the room dimensions. People can't tell how many, and what size, sofas/chairs you can fit in the space.

    Sectionals with large ottomans.

It looks like you have a nice house. How big is your room? From the photo, it seems as if the sectional is taking up all the room. I'd recommend a sofa and two chairs instead. I'd also replace the ottoman. But it's difficult to give you advice without seeing the entire room and giving measurements.

I really dislike sectionals IMO the most expensive way to but the least # of comfy seats arm rests = comfort so 2 people get one and the rest lined up in arow that is awful for conversation too. Sofa 2 chairs is IMO always better Please no recliners and not dark brown

Not sure sofa and two chairs fit. why no recliner? @Patricia Colwell Consulting

it just doesn’t work for us.

What about it does not work for you? Say more and show more. How many people do you want to seat in here? You need a pathway through this room, but are you also trying to see a TV above a fireplace in here too?

I can tell you what about it doesn't work for me: You home has slender lines and the sofa is gigantic and bulky. It looks like it is crammed in to the corner of this room. The color isn't good. A recliner requires more space behind it for a walking path than a regular sofa does. A sectional takes up a lot of room but doesn't seat that many people.

Without knowing the full size of the room it is hard to give guidance on what to use instead. Assuming you might want to watch a TV placed above a fireplace, I'd get a longer sofa parallel to the stairs and swivel chair parallel to the radiator.

I wouldn't get recliners - your room is too small as you have to place them closer to the TV to get enough room to walk behind and it is just a very awkward look in your really beautiful room.

I like these long ottomans across from a sofa. You can put trays on them to use as a coffee table or throw your feet on them. The come in different sizes and fabric choices from Room and Board.

If you're not sure that a sofa and two chairs fit, you need to take measurements to be sure. Depends on the size of the sofa and chairs. There are 72" sofas and 110" sofas. There are chairs that are 28" wide and those that are 42" wide. It all comes down to the size of the room, how many doorways/openings are in the room, and whether you have any other architectural features, like windows, fireplaces, stairways, and heating/ac units.

Another consideration is what do you want to do in the room? Do you need a TV? Is it just a sitting room? We can't determine that by looking at one photo. It all comes down to the space, and the math. If you had a decorator come to your house, they would first ask the purpose of the room and then take measurements.

It’s quite hard to get a sense of the space from the one pic shared. Can you share more info? In the right space I’m a sectional fan, unlike most folks on this app, but the one in tue pick looks like it dominates the space

I like sectionals ... really like sectionals, but this one OVERWHELMS the space ... the size and the color are "too much" for the space. I'd go for a sofa & chair(s). Choose a softer color. Choose a smaller size ... is this room on the smaller size? Maybe opt for apartment-sized furnishings.

Once you have the big pieces in place, "decorate" your sofa with a couple throws and pillows. As it's shown now, it's kinda "naked".

It looks like a very small space, and the sectional is way too large for that space. You could look at doing an apartment sized sofa and two swivel chairs, if you have the space. Below is one of our designs just to let you see how a sofa and two chairs might work:

It depends on how many wil use the seating at the same time and what you'll use it for. A sectional with a chaise and large ottomans fits for several family members watching tv or using laptops/phones with snacks or casual meals during the use. One person or two means something more compact can work. This Ikea Uppland with an ottoman can be enough for one or two.

Or a sofa with large ottoman for one person.

The sectional and ottoman would probably not work for a lot of people.

Room looks small with fireplace hearth right next to one end of the sectional. Staircase in the room, so no front entry to speak of?

Would sofa, back to staircase and facing fireplace work?

You could then have two chairs on either side of fireplace.

Great to have a photo, but can you post more from all angles? And do a drawing of the room showing all the dimensions? So now we see that you have a TV in the room, which is an important fact to keep in mind.

Sectional IMO seldom work well for anyone. It's very hard to fit them into many rooms as they just don't allow flexibility. Would suggest a sofa and chairs instead.

The sectional you have is for sure too large for the space. Something different may work but it’s very hard to discern size of the room from your photo. If you like sectionals it could be done well if measurements were given and one was thoughtfully planned but it will be quite different than what you have now for sure.

Ekornes Stressless are very good quality and expensive, but as you state it is too large for the space.

I recently helped an elderly couple that needed two recliners but owned a large sectional. Instead of getting rid of their sectional we used the two ends that had arms and removed one of the armless seats and the corner piece, leaving a 4 seat sofa.

I cannot see if your sofa can be broken down into a 4 seater or not. If not it may end up being too long as a 5 seat sofa.

You may also be able to remove just one of the seats on the 3 seat side and have a 2x2 sectional vs a 2x3.

@BeverlyFLADeziner thank you! the setup on left will work best for us. i hate the tv over the fireplace - my neck hates it more

Agree Beverly’s left option could work.
