Entryway - stairs and storage

last month

This is our entry way. My dad made the bench/storage we’ve been using but it becomes a dumping ground and with 4 people in the house the coat rack regularly overflows with coats. We want storage and some seating… is this possible?

sure! look for "mud room" and "entry bench" photos and you'll find a lot of approaches that include cubbies for coats, bags, shoes, and the rest, with or without concealing doors.

Looks like there is a hall closet. Is that being used for coats?

That staircase wall would look better with a console table and mirror IMO.

There is a coat closet, but it is full. I think we need to do a purge and put seasonal ones in storage in the garage. It should also be noted that I have a six and eight year-old, so things that are as fancy as the one in the picture aren’t practical for boots and all those things.

You could look at cleaning out the closet, reorganizing, or looking into some mudroom designs for your space. Below are just two mudroom designs we did for clients:

Turn the bench so it it is along the shorter wall. Add hooks to the wall at various heights. Done!

Is this your only entry? Yes your coat closet should be seasonal, especially if your seasons really vary. We store our non seasonal items in my son’s closet as he barely uses it. You could get a closet organizer system put in the front entry that could help too. Young kids can put things away just like anyone else as long as they have a spot for it to go. In our old house, at the back, we made a diy mud room entry and used Billy bookcase to create a spot for shoes. Bottom three bins were lids, top was gloves etc, middle two my husband and I. We had lower hanging for the coats kids used every day and beside it hanging for our coats we used every day. Kids could hang their own coats easily on hooks. There was then a tray below our hanging area that wet boots went onto.

Do you have an entry from a garage or side door? Typically, people use the front door for guests and the family uses a secondary entry.

For example, I have a mudroom that is right next to the entry from my garage - we never use the front door ourselves.

If you don't have a secondary family entry, then you could do a simply hall tree type of storage. You can easily build a built-in bench + add cubbies + hooks + baskets for shoes. Look for IKEA mudroom hacks - there are a lot of storage options that people have built using different IKEA pieces. Makes it simpler vs. building from scratch if you aren't a DIY person.

Here is an IKEA Hemnes shoe storage cabinets - they have two different sizes + some hooks added for jackets:

This could be used in a mudroom or entry (designed to fit the space). It uses a Hemnes tv cabinet for the bench + a Hemnes overhead piece for the cubbies. The rest is simply installing trim boards on the drywall. Hemnes product line uses solid wood.

This is another IKEA hack - you can do a Google search with your camera to find the blog.

Below are two more IKEA hacks for adding storage systems

This hack could be configured in different ways in order to fit the area you have by the front door. They used IKEA Kallax units to make it. You can add baskets or doors to the Kallax units depending on your needs. The Kallax units are made in a few sizes.

I would remove the doors on the closet and use the hooks and cubby approach. Remove the coat rack and put a bench so you can sit to put on your shoes, boots etc. You will have to do seasonal turn arounds and have another place to store the out of season wear items.
