Rug placement on hardwood

Help please -I have a Restoration hardware sofa and I'm unable to put a rug under the front legs because the rug will hit the hearth of my fireplace which I cannot redo. I know designers say to always put the rug under the legs of the sofa but it won't work, and I also have a chair across from it and two chairs further on the side. Should I get a smaller rug and put it under the coffee table so the room is not only hardwood floors?

We could provide you with a solution if we saw the conditions.

I'm afraid we're having our floors refinished so I don't have any furniture in the room right now. I couldn't find any pictures with the new Restoration hardware sofa that is so wide. I've included a picture of the fireplace hearth that the rug would bang into and the chair across from the sofa. Also here is a picture of the old sofa just so you can see an idea of where it's at.

Like Beverly shows, there are many ways to style a rug. That said, sometimes things are no perfect. Of course, you need wood showing around the entire rug.

In my Florida home I have the sofa fron legs on but the two chairs are entirely on.

    It’s fine.

My least favorite though is a rug just under the coffee table.

This is all you have given us to work with so far. Don't know where you placed the chair or what else might be in the room.

Go to a good carpet store that carries good quality products and they can cut and bind any of the carpets into any shape. You can have the carpet cut to follow the shape/angle of the fireplace, so you can have a larger rug overall made to fit the room.

Judy, It's a small living room so I can't move the sofa further away from the fireplace and still have it centered under the window. I bought the wrong sofa but can't return. A larger rug hits the hearth. Thank you for replying.

Crispa, that's a great idea. I'm going to look into it. Thank you!

There are lots of real world situations where putting the sofa's front legs on a rug simply won't work. A custom cut carpet as Chispa suggests is a good solution. Sometimes people want to use a special antique or favorite rug that doesn't quite fit size guidelines and that is just fine.
