They should all be equal distance above the tread... just as you would hang pictures equal distant above each tread.

Well, Stax. My contractor must have thought it was good enough, also. I posted more pics with measurements. It appears eyeballing isn’t good enough.

The lights should be at the same height and position over the treads unless there is an obstruction in the wall cavity such as a pipe.

Unequal light can be a safety hazard too.

Talk to your GC to have this corrected. Personally, I would mark the correct position in pencil for each light.

There are 10 steps, and 4 lights. So evenly spaced, that is 10/4 = 2.5 However, the steps are integers, while the lights are fractions.

I'd add another light, and place a light on every other step. Hopefully, the framing will allow that.

Yes, ideally they would all be the same height. But this is not the battle I'd fight with a contractor. (If this is the biggest issue you have with their work you are very lucky.) Once the home is complete and there are many things to see in the space, a difference of three inches will not even register to the eye.

I have mine on my risers and motion sensored so ven in the dark they come on for safety . The stairs are still open aybe ask about that choice I agree they look odd where they are aand IMO worth the talk about it

If they're going to bother you, now's the time to change them. I wouldn't blame the electrician. They probably picked convenient studs to attach boxes to. There should be a sketch how you'd like to see them, and carpenter can add blocking to better space the lights. However if a stud is in the way, that complicates the layout. Some drywall work, a little framing, an hour or two by the electrician.

BTW if the contractor takes it upon himself to do this with no concern about how it looks I would be hugely supect about his other work

Licensed? Do you have plans that showed what you wanted? What were your expectations and were they shared and confirmed in writing?
